After being away for 2 months, and giving the old girl everything she could have ever asked for, she decided to have what we believe to be a bearing failure in the rear diff, and the rear diff is now very unhappy. Lots of metal in on the drain plug magnet, and there was a whole heap of noise and now a very unpleasant drive.

She's headed back off to our LC guy to investigate, but based on available used diffs in the correct ratio, it makes sense for us to get the current one rebuilt rather than buying an unknown diff. The 'cone' case which the diff bolts to has pitting around where the pinion seal sits against which has meant a slow leak is also inevitable, so we are likely to order a new case too.

We are in very far on this truck, and have no option but to continue as she's a good truck, but it's been a slog keeping the faith the past day or so. Another big bill coming our way 🥲

Whilst it's there, I'm going to get it fitted with a new rear pinion flange too, and then the front shocks need new bushes, and we should be good to go for a while and officially everything suspension wise and bushing wise changed out for whole new OEM assemblies.

In the UK, our roads are salted, and these trucks rust out like it's going out of fashion, so I bought this on the basis of it's 'surface rust' being minimal, which it still is (it'll need some treatment next year). Sadly, it's needed a whole heap more other than I originally envisaged, and sure we could have done it cheaper (aftermarket vs OEM everything), but we want this to be around for a long time, so the positive after all of this work will be a really nice truck!

All positive vibes gratefully received!

A little update for you!

The actuator fork was broken inside the diff, and the pinion bearing failed too. The casing around the pinion seal was also pitted from rust too, so rather than deal with more issues of the pinion seal leaking continuously...

Courtesy of Dave @ Japan4X4 in Japan, we've just received a brand new genuine diff (in 3rd member casing), fitted with the rear locker actuator too.
I was looking at circa £500 for a 2nd hand rear diff with no guarantees and a lifetime of use, so we opted to pay circa £1200 all in which included the actuator (which by itself is around £550 in the UK).

The diff will be fitted early next week, along with a few front shock bushes and we'll be back in business, a few pictures in the mean time for your entertainment!

I'm thinking this old girl deserves a bit more of a resto-thread on here as the amount of work and (all-oem) parts than have gone into this truck in the past 6 months is obscene 😂😂😂

Good Job, still amazes me how alluring it is to see new parts, sqeaky clean :) Something EV's will have a hard time replacing ... Nice wheels also, I am looking into Bronze/Gold. But currently no money to upgrade.

Did the HVAC button replacement and three new OEM Knobs. Also installed an antenna splitter so now the aftermarket radio actually has radio now. The previous owner just left the two wires disconnected in there. Much better with everything working!

Edit: I also just left the tire shop. Got new Falken Wildpeak AT4W in 265/70R18 SL rating. Much better ride than the KO2 that were on it, trash tires.
