Put in some new KTRS-79 springs in the back, and then baby got a bath.

Pulled the raft out to the Delaware for a late season float. Chilly but so fun to be on the river with my bestie @kasassy for hours and we had the entire stretch to ourselves. Hardest I've laughed in months and really, really needed it.

Today I caught up on my storage projects. Installed Land Shark reef and wing, front runner fridge slide on a false floor and custom fit some solar panels to the rack with some salvaged aluminum angle stock.

Lockhart Basin for the second time in this LX—last time it was the running boards that got smashed, and this time's the death knell for my wheels.

This is the second time I've had a major problem with them (one is cracked behind the lip, but so far holds air), so they're done. They're discontinued anyway, so I can't replace like for like. IDK what the problem is with them yet, but I suspect I'm loaded heavier than they anticipate (~7500lbs fully kitted for a trip). Lockhart Rd isn't difficult enough (anymore—it was WAY easier than 3 years ago) for this kind of damage to be acceptable.

Even with all that damage, it holds air. Until the bend is lined up on the bottom, then the air squeaks out like an emergency fart on a first date. For a few miles I honestly thought it was one of the polyurethane bushings in the rear control arms.

Now to spend the next 3 weeks in the wheels and tires threads trying to find something that might work. Yuck.

Fuel Anzas. Never again.

Edit: I'll add my copilot so it's not just a bunch of whining. Copilot training is going well—so far she's giving me the proper amount of side-eye when we come down a little too hard.

ouch. I don’t know of a silver bullet for that butmy initial thoughts are:

-wider tire for better protection
-Would a different manufacturer of cast wheels be significantly better (thinking evo corse, braid, or Hutchinson— not sure if these are winners but are ones I’d research)
-would a forged wheel be that much better
-go steel and get a BFH

All of those have crossed my mind at one point or another. I've wanted the Hutchinsons for a long time but have failed to save for them—the money always feels better in the gas tank, out in the boonies somewhere. And the Fuels I have...have done OK until the last 6 months or so. I don't think I can go wider—I'm already at 295/70 R18.

I figured on the tires. They look fine. Also, I edited my post a bit— I don’t know if those names are winners but where I’d start my research given their pedigree. I’ll be curious to know what you decide.

FWIW, the stock Toyota forged wheels are pretty damn stout and tough...

Yes , they are. I have banged the :poop: out of mine and not even a mark. Also they are lighter than most of the aftermarket options as well. For a function over form guy, they are a sound choice. If you need more style and color, just powder coat or paint them. The only other wheels I have seriously considered is the 17 inch Rock Warriors.

Right on, thanks. I picked up a set of early 100 series wheels a few weeks ago on a whim so it looks like I'll be shopping new rubber this week. Now to figure out what to do with these tires. They're 4 months old. Oh well

Right there with you @04gto. Super impressed with my decision to go with RWs and 17s. Lots of room for rubber and the TRD forged wheels are really tough customers...

How much air are you running when out playing in the LB @saucebox ? I've been blessed on numerous situations by increasing sidewall protection for the wheels and increased contact patch for slow speed traction by reducing psi. It tends to protect the beads as you slide off a rock and softens the blows experienced by under water/overlooked obstructions.

Usually between 16 and 22 psi—this trip at 20. For the road, I'm usually at 40psi.

RWs were on the shortlist. Then I looked at their cost last night...if you need a set right now, they're almost the same cost as Hutchinsons.

Wow, didn't realize the RWs had appreciated so well... Hutchinson makes a very robust wheel to be sure. Have you considered the Black Rhino, they appear to be half the price and are forged alloys...? Rotary Forged™ Truck Wheels | Truck and SUV Wheels and Rims by Black Rhino

some info on rotary forging. Hadn’t heard the term before and thought this was interesting.

You gotta be feeling pretty smart about picking those up! I am betting you sell those tires and recoup at least 50% of the initial cost on Craigslist or Offerup. Good luck.

They were $25! I couldn't pass it up, loose long term plan was to wear out the Coopers I have now and go back to ATs for the daily and use the LC rims for muds.

 on me if you or @Eighteen11R make it out to run some Utah trails.
