This has been in the classifieds here for awhile and looks to be a good start. Tell me what you think.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?p=856970#post856970

I did ask him some other ?'s via PM and he responded to me. I can send that info via PM to you if you wanna know what he said. (I dont wanna put out all the info on this until I decide to pass or not)
The biggest ? I asked was if it was cut and turned he said yes.

Here are the questions I have
1. Do you think i tis a good deal?
2. How much $ do you think it will take to finish?
3. DO you see anything majorly wrong with this?

4. Just buy it or stop looking at 40's and build-up the 62 with gears, longs, and protection?

looks to me a good deal for the money, especially if all the parts are there and all that has to be done is bolting things back together and buying a few small parts.

it would def be a good trail truck, SOA and that SM420. I think the first gear in that is 7.?? it is pretty darn low :D

I would buy it, if like I said the mahority of the work is just your labor of reinstalling everything......

so get it you can't beat a 40

Thanks for the quick reply. I forgot to add that is does have highsteer too. (Dunno what type)

Any idea on cost of parts needed? Lengthen DS's etc? I really want to stay under $3K the lower the better, so I might sell some of the extra parts like jeep style seats, etc. (Says he has stock stuff too.)

I hear you on the sm420, it is 7.1 I think. But I would need it with the 38" tires. (which are bald and not the ones in the pic)

This is what I can gather from him at this point. I am goign to make a list of this stuff and a list of questions and ask him. So if you can think of anything I need to ask then let me know.

He thinks he might be able to find the distributor and the exhaust manifold (not sure where it is in the garage) He is selling this for a friend.

" you will need spark plugs, hoses, nutts and bolts (although I have a box full of bolts to go with it)."
radiator is there but says it may need a new one.
Taillights are gone
Benzels for headlights might be gone.
Needs the exhaust.
Needs Brake lines.
Will need new tires very soon, says they are bald but have enough tread to roll or flat tow
it.

?'s I have down to ask about:
Shift linkage for trans and TC there?
Trans and TC shift smoothly? mileage on each?
Carb linkage included with new carb and/or it the old included?
Stock seat brakets included and what condition are stock seats in?
Compression on the engine?
All Guages work/worked?
What type of high steer?
Brake lines need is this hard or soft or both?
Can you check about the parts you think are there?
Any other spare parts?

Thats all I can think of for now. I want to make sure i know what I am getting into b/f I buy something and am screwed b/c I am over my head. (I can do bolt on stuff all day. Even though I am not the fastest person. Its fabing stuff where I get iffy.)

I would imagine, that you could get it all "buttoned up" dshafts and all for under 500 bucks..... maybe less. Also our club has a vast resource of knowledge especially about 40's and we have quite a few capable fabricators who are always willing to lend a hand. So don't worry about getting in over your head we will be here to help you out.

as for the questions you have for him all looks well to me, i have found that no matter how many questions your ask, you always find a few surprises :D but that is the fun of buying of crusiers right?? ;)

the hardest part is proper bodywork/paint. get a good idea of whats under all that diamond plate. $3000 becomes a lot more money when you start considering a new tub.....

He says that the rust has been - "Rust has been completely removed, i.e. cut out of rear fenders, and aluminum diamond plated."

Just because the rust isn't there anymore doesn't mean there is gaping hole behind that diamond plate. And it will come back. Ask me how I know.:D

isn't this thing supposed to be a trail rig though??? if you really plan on wheeling it in my mind a good body is a bad thing....... i don't have any straight body panels on my 40 after a couple years of wheeling, and you won't find a project cruiser without rust :D

This coming from the guy that rolled his 40 GETTING to trails to wheel!! :D

I guess the challenge is defining what "project" means to you. Rust repair? Resto? Reassembly? You have a comfort zone with what you want and what you're willing to pay but I'd be a bit leery here because the communication gaps in this transaction leave a lot of possibilities with unknowns and ambiguities that could be expensive and disappointing later. Basically the seller is 3 levels removed from owning / knowing the truck (realizing the owner isn't around).

I looked for my 40 for 4 years before I found the one I really wanted. During that time, I learned a lot about what to look for, market value of different things and got good at identifying issues, problems and money pits right away. Point being, get as much info as possible up front to REALLY know what you're getting into and what you can live with and want.

Marshall and Gehn make good points about the rust. It may be cut out and replaced with diamond plating but what's under the plating? Holes in the tub? Left over rust? Bondo? Fixing that properly can get expensive $$$. The guy specifically says the diamond plating covers up sheet metal rust in the post. Also, I would be concerned about a 40 that has an older F in unknown condition when it should have a 2F stock. Why the step down?

It would be a shame to waste your hard earned money budgeted for a project cruiser, spend it on this 40 and get it home to realize you haven't even gotten to the tip of the iceberg expense-wise.

My .02, TIFWIW.

You probably already have this or have seen it but if not, may help you in your search: http://www.birfield.com/~ramullen/FAQ/TEXT/15-01.html

Good luck!!

i don't think I was meant to give advice in life ............ Andy, Marshall, and Gehn are the ones to listen hear for sure Matt; i am way to prone to jump into things

I don't know about that! You jumped into UPSTATE CRUISERS and it's been fun for everybody. Don't short-change yourself. You are are real ASS-SET to this club.:grinpimp:

Matt, This is about the best you're gonna do for the money. More money, more cruiser. But this seems fair to me. When I was looking for a good base for a trail truck I would have bought this. To turn this one into very very capable it will cost around 5000-10,000 depending on your definition of capable.

Alan,
Can you split up where the $ would go? (with spending that kind of $) I figure it could be on the trail/road for about an extra $1K.

Seems like convincing the wife is going to be the issue. Showed her the pics tonight and she says, " I wish you would quit looking at those you don't need that."
Said that she can understand me spending $ on the 62 but not buying another cruiser. Any advice? I am on the fence as to what to do.

100% agree with Alan. The way you jump into things is one of the things I respect most about you. Your zeal is calculated, thought out and a blast!!!

Fame and fortune might not be your thing, me neither, but being comfortable and doing your thing seems to be your path. You've got a gift my friend, don't ever lose sight of that!

89's rule - if Alan thinks it's a good deal, that's a worthy endorsement every day of the week...
