what do the 4runner guys do with 80 series coils?

anyone know a good link explaining how 4runner guys use the stock 80 coils to lift their trucks? I advertised mine on a localx4 board for sale and got some interest but also questions. I guess folks don't know how to do it up here because they don't see the coils in Canada very often. I did a search at yotatech and got a lot of posts that assume you know how to do it but could not find an actual tech write up.
 
As far as I know the fj80 springs are a direct replacement for
the coil springs in 4-runners.
However there are some problems with lifting coil sprung
4-runners that high with out changing other things.
You would have to make some custom upper control links
or you would rip it off the axle.
Also some lower control arm links to put the axle back
where it is supposed to be.
You also need pan-hard brackets to keep the drive shaft
from hitting the gas tank.
You should check out allpro offroad and look under their
coil spring lifts and it will explain everything.

Stock 80 coils, longer shocks (stock cruiser rears work well) and a panhard drop bracket = about 4" lift in the rear of 2nd gen Runners.

I can't tell if that's a control arm or a leaf pack. Are those leaves or a coil front on that Runner?
 
Ahh, still stock then. Looked like it was SFAS'd to me for some reason.

What you see in the picture is the front drive shaft not leaf springs or control arm. Wow! what a nice rig!
 
For 2nd gen runners '89-95 you put new rear springs in which give +2" over stock, I never knew 80 coils did the same. A 2" panhard drop bracket is needed to realign your axle. For this amount of lift, no extended brake lines are needed but longer shocks like ES9000s are recommended to prevent stock ones bottoming out.
At the front they crank up the torsion bars for 1.5" of lift but going beyond that is asking for CV trouble due to the new angles.

I never got to do this and tonite I just sold my '91 and saw it off on a recovery truck hehehehehehehe now for 3 Land Cruisers (all rust rotten but sounds like fun)
 
With cruiser coils a longer brake line is needed, especially with longer shocks. I just bought the downey panhard lowering bracket for $40.

But yes, they're a direct replacement for the stock coils. Most people who just want to get rid of the saggy butt just go with downey 1.5 HDs. Like Toys R us said, you'll get 3-4 inches out of cruiser coils.
 
if that fails you can grab a plank and do some bongo boarding.....

I'm going to do this install this week- I've got a trailmaster lift in it now, but the springs seem tired, the rear sags. I picked up some 80 springs from a friend so when I swap the axles(stock for a '95 modded for the elocker) I plan on installing the 80 coils. If it still sags I'll add packers. I'll post pics before and after next week.

the axle will not rip off.... i am running 38's with 2.5" 80 lift coils...... downey panhard drop. i am worried about the driveshaft rubbing thru the gas tank

the landcruiser coils are actually wider than the 4runner coils...... i tried to use my downey spacers on top of the coils and they are too big...
 
well i sold my coils for $80 to a guy with 4runner who had "longarmed" it after the panhard bracket didn't work. seems like a good guy so I hope it works for him. Also has a 40.
