Yeah 4BD1T, getting a full rebuild, bigger turbo, intercooler and tweaked fuel. Hope to get about 200HP and 450ft/lbs as well as 2x the millage I get now (low 20's).

This past weekend

I took my recently acquired 96 FZJ80 out in the Santa Ynez Valley in So Cal for some trails and hills with my buddy Paul. I had never been off-roading before, and it was a lot of fun. I'm new to this whole off-road thing. It was a blast!

I realized quickly that indeed the stock spare location is a danger, and the tow hitch is too low too. I already took off the hitch, and I'm ordering a spare tire raise/level kit from Ajik Overland Exchange today. I think that's $80 well spent. The pics and results I've seen online for the self done approaches seem less sturdy and don't appear to level the wheel when done. Plus the time and hassle factor. I figure I'm probably paying a $40-$50 premium over getting the hardware myself and doing it, but it won't require multiple trips, getting out the Dremel, and I have guaranteed good results.

I got a little trail rash on the rig, too, which I am a little bummed about. It didn't occur to me that those bushes would scratch up my paint like that.

I dream of doing that kind of swap. It will probably always be only a dream, though.

Thanks, has and will be an interesting journey. Look forward to feeling the difference in power. 200hp in a diesel feels a lot different than 200hp in a gasser, the almost doubled torque will be nice too, hope the trans can take it

Did you notice how those llamas seem to work together to make the cars stop?! One would get directly in front of the Cruiser and hold it's ground while the others attacked then they would trade places....pretty sure! Oh, and great pic of Tatoosh!

My volkswagen with it's tuned 2.0T is running in the neighborhood of 250whp and about 260ft/lb of torque. Weighs about 3500lbs iirc.

I rate it "pleasingly zippy" but I'm not a racer.

I am however adding water/meth injection soon.

Yes it is, I'm not trying to build a rocket I am doing it for reliability, range, simplicity (no electronics to run at all) and lastly power.

I have driven a lot of similar HP cars both diesel and gas and my preference is for the surge of power you get right away with a diesel, yes it peters out in the top end but I can count on one had how many times I have revved out my 1FZ currently in my truck after 40k kms of use.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it drives I would be a fool to be expecting much more performance than the 1FZ currently delivers the 2x better mileage is what I am looking for.

Added a VDO Water temperature gauge to the A pillar. Use the Auto meter radiator hose adapter for the sending unit and a pillar housing from summit racing to mount it up.

One of the better cheap upgrades I have done lately. It's nice to know exactly what the temperatures are doing!

Blitzkrieg style front axle rebuild in an evening with JackZilla... we started around 5 pm, stopped for dinner and his birthday cake (pudding?) thing, then hit it hard until a little after midnight.

This was my first, his second. Lots of cleaning and learning for me, but damn did she need it bad.

I'm almost willing to bet this was the first in her 297k miles. New birfs will probably happen within the year, but for now she's buttoned up and back on the road.

It feels great knowing its done, like a cruiser right of passage!
