What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (61 Viewers)

Finished building the bumper Saturday morning and then installed an OME heavy/med 2.5 lift. Dropped it off for tires this a.m. and picked it up at noon. So it didn't all happen this weekend, but it was close.

Tires are 305 Duratracs (wide 33"). I justified the 305's over 285's because I'm surrounded by sand. And they were actually cheaper.

I'm liking how it's turning out.

It is looking sharp!!

I was going to buy 285's but those 305's look really good! How is driveability? Stock gears? Truck looks great btw

Folding trailer?

Sent usin the "new" app.

Indeed, a folding trailer:

The wee casters it comes with for rolling it around in folded-up form are going to be worthless on the rotten concrete slab i call a driveway, but i may still be able to shove it in my shed when i'm not using it. I also may just put bigger casters on it.

Fully built and with stake sides installed it weighs maybe 300 pounds, so it is well under the 750 pound limit for an unregistered trailer in Utah.

It does not come with a spare tire, spare tire mounting bracket, or trailer jack. And one should not expect the original wiring to last more than a few years, because the vinyl insulation on harbor freight trailer wiring is not UV protected.

It was a big day for me at at HF. I got the trailer, spare tire, spare tire carrier, four 6 ton jack stands (for the cruiser! Because they are tall!), a tarp, some tie-downs, etc. Most of that stuff was on sale, and then less 20% per coupon. i was discounted something like $270 off of the bill had i been paying full price for everything.

Yeah, really looking forward to that trip. Glad to see you're going too, at least I'll know 1 person!

I'm ready to get a look at that bumper of yours up close. I know it's going to make me want one. BTW, you pulling the trailer this time?

What route you taking to Clayton? Maybe we could meet up halfway and drive in together? You're in NWA right? I'm in LR, I have no idea where our routes might meet? Just let me know.

Thanks for the compliments on the bumper and truck, guys. Yes, I built the bumper from scratch. It worked out great for me. $80 for the steel (got remnant price on all) and $290 for a China eBay plasma cutter. It was a good price and I got a plasma cutter out of the deal. I made a cardboard template as the first step and just went for it. Of course the build threads here and on other boards helped. ; )

Regarding the Duratracs, I only have about 10 miles on them and those are also the first miles with the new OME suspension, so it's hard to tell what is tire and what is OME. I will say they are much quieter than I expected. At 45mph I had to listen hard to hear them at all.

got rear diff back in. still hating the quality of the gears/bearings. may have jacked the pinion threads trying to get the f'n bearings to seat onto the pinion shaft....won't do nitros again unless i have an actual 20ton press. actually...just won't do them again. second initial test run tomorrow. will be the second drive with the new exhaust, then maybe this weekend i can try to get it through emissions again. :frown:

Interesting, I have put Nitro gears in 3 trucks now as well as there install kits and no issues at all. My old truck has 80k on them and the new owner has not had issues yet.

It would be great if you could post the link to your bumper build thread or more pictures here:idea::D

Bought another 80.

Though this one will become something completely different.

:)

Basically bought it for a good clean title, straight frame, and locking 3rd members. :)

$600.

Now I have to tow it back to SLC.

Thanks to BionicCruiser for getting it out of impound and Cdan for storing it at his place.

Onur:
Loving those pants!:flipoff2:

I was just at Harbor Freight on Saturday and saw these winches at their parking lot sale for $299. If I had the spare cash I would have grabbed one.
in the offroad mag for december theres a coupon for it for 329.99 and its good thur feb 9 2013. i plan on using it to get mine.

Yes it is. We call it Hawaiian air! We just wash our rigs after every outing. What side are you on? Looks like Moks (Mokuleia). Rig looks like someone I know

It was just north (maybe 5 miles?) from Waimea Bay. Loved it down there. Wish I could've just asked someone to pack up my kids, send 'em down, and never leave. ;)

Maybe I should've said 5 miles past Waimea? I'm not certain it was north. Anyway, I took that pic just before we drove up the road to Turtle Bay for dinner at some resort. The waves were pretty large that day (the 9th). I took video of some real giants. I've never experienced seeing waves that big before. Humbling.

I attempted to replace a leaking rear main seal on my 80. I say attempted because after 10 hours I only was able to reinstall the new seal and transmission. The wiring, driveshafts, and sway bar will have to wait until next weekend. My hands and scalp are hamburger after spending hours trying to figure out where to put my hands to bust the starter and bell housing bolts loose; and I have small hands! I wouldn't recommend doing this without a lift. Also managed to break only one connector!

I figured out a couple tricks to make to the job easier... Somewhat. PM me if you are thinking of doing this your self and I will do my best to talk you out of it. ; )

Finally got the bumper back from powder coating, and put it on!

Photos as promised a long time ago...
