Went Camping Finally!

I just bought the crusier a few weeks ago. After considering a Saginaw conversion for those few weeks, I put in an OEM power steering pump and used gearbox from cruiserparts.net. Despite all of the warnings I'd heard about pulling pump, mine slid right out. No problem. It's good, because my arms were getting sore from parallel parking with a dead ps pump and leaky gear box. It is much nicer now.

Only trouble I ran into, aside from the crazy torque on the gearbox bolts, was a drag link that was fused solid.

I knew it was loose and ordered a rebuild kit, but it was beyond saving. So the truck is still in the parking spot waiting for all new drag links and tie rod ends. (Might as well get the whole 555 kit.)

MN road salt is no joke.

Drove it.

From 10/2013 to 6/2014 (8 mo.) my cruiser was down while I worked on it's first big repairs/restoration project. I worked on it almost every day.

When that series of projects was finished, I drove it for four days.
Then I decided to tear the motor apart.

From 6/2014 to 3/2015 (9 mo.) the cruiser was down again for a new repairs/restoration project. I worked on it roughly 5 days a week with a few week long breaks.

When that series of projects was finished, I drove it for four days while I tinkered with valves & head bolt torque.
Then I decided to have the distributor reworked.

From 3/15 to 5/15 the dissy was out for Jim to perform his voodoo on it.

On the last day of May, 2015.. 18 months after I had started......just this last weekend, aka "What Did I Do With My Cruiser This Weekend?"…….The cruiser was finally driven hard for 150 miles on a hot day out in the desert and up into the mountains and it ran better than it has ever run in it's whole life.

My God! Such immense work is involved with getting these old beasts back into Varsity Shape.

And these old Land Cruisers are easy………………………….

On the plus side now you know every nut and bolt in that engine bay... I know how you feel having torn mine apart at the moment. It's been nine days now, the longest it's been and it feels like forever. Nothing compared to months at a time though!

Is the location of the air intake stock?.....Advantages/disadvantages of this if it's a mod?

Not stock.
When a big 2nd battery is installed (which is not installed in that pic) it gets in the way of the stock air intake hose. So I used this Spectre air duct hose.
You can see that the radiator expansion tank has been moved to the passenger's side too.

This duct is the perfect size and can 'screw' into that square hole that exists in the inner fender and make a gentle right angle bend to reach the round hole opening in the front... at the same location the stock intake hose attaches. It fits into that hole opening perfectly too. Nice & snug.

The quality of this duct is very good. It is strong and thick. I used to have one of those thin flimsy ducts... & it fell apart after a couple years. This one looks like it's going to last a very long time.

Nice mod.
Is that a battery cable going over the radiator then?
Did you consider mounting the second battery behind the OEM? I think 4-Plus or someone makes a mount for this.

I'm in the process of my dual battery setup, I like the idea of a battery on each side of the radiator to help balance the static weight of the batteries out. 45+ pounds per battery so 90+ pounds on one corner could cause issue.

This was not last weekend, but here is my dual battery set up/ I used a second factory 60 tray and mount with a cable connecting them. Simple and works well.

Output, that is clean!

Doug, did you use an isolator or did you wire the batteries in parallel? That wire up across the shroud makes me think that they're wired in parallel.

No isolator in parallel.
