I am thinking about installing some driving lights on my 78 (The bumper will fit any size up to about 8") and I am amazed at some of the prices for the PIAA sets, like 350+ for the 550's. Anyone have any suggestions for an alternative brand or are these lights just flat out worth the extra cash?

These will be used primarily for night driving on country roads, not used at all for wheeling at night.

Thanks for the help.

Currently running Hella Rallye 4000.
Rock solid.

I run Hella 500's. Less expensive ($70) and plenty of light. Had them on a 92 pick-up since 96 and never changed a bulb....but they see plenty of use, vibration. The stone gaurds are long gone...but the lenses are tough and have taken some hits...but no cracks to date.

I have the big 8 inch or so hella 4000's on my 40 and I love them. Easy to adjust and incredibly bright. I've used the 500's too and been impressed with them, especially for the money. I have a set of 6 inch piaa lights on my wife's 4 runner that were originally like $400 for the set. They are nice, but the reflectors are now rusty, and the housings rusted pretty badly too after a few years. I would suggest Hellas over the Piaas. Seem to get more for your money.

Thanks, I have seen some Hellas pretty reasonably priced so I will likely go with those.
I appreciate the feedback.

had Hella 4000s on my old 40. Loved them. No experience with the PIAAs but the Hellas were great!

I run the 500's on my '73 40 & a combo of both the 500's & 4000's on my '72 55. They NEED to be mounted behind some sort of protection bar. Plastic housing & stone shields that crack around the edges if your rig is stored outside for a long period of time. I'd use different quality switches. Other than that, they've been quite good & dependable.

I would also go with the hellas seem to be great for the pricing.

A little side question, box rocket. What trail is that? And Is that Kurt I see in the background?
