I tried the CD slot magnetic holder from Wizgear. I really like the magnetic holder part, but the CD slot portion didn't work for me. It kept working its way out of the slot. I even doubled up on the included spacers, but it wouldn't stay put. So I replaced it with the adhesive backed version, $10 on Amazon. So far, so good.

Don't know about the Wizgear, but I tried this one, and the spring mechanism holds the device in the CD slot very tight. No spacers needed.

It works better in our 4Runner as the CD slot is higher, so I don't have to look down. I put the Android Auto app on my phone, so my phone automatically goes into "Car mode" when I start the car. Makes a nice interface and easy to use. Almost makes me not wish for a better aftermarket stereo option. Sad that my 2003 4Runner could easily have such a better aftermarket system installed. I looked at adding climate controls from an australian 200, but it looks like you lose front seat control over the back individual zones (button in front is only two zones), as well as the rear dvd.

I also looked at Vline, but after talking with them, most of the functions I want won't work (doesn't work with factory microphone, steering wheel controls largely not supported, Android Auto not supported, and you have to run a hotspot through your phone to get it to work).

Having had Android Auto in my 4Runner, and seeing how well the integration worked, I wish I still have it as an option, but not at the expense of losing climate controls (including heated wipers) and the rear dvd.

I've used the iMagent mount before, and while it worked great for my old phone, it wasn't strong enough for my Pixel XL with a Lifeproof case. I've since switched to this Ram Mount and like a lot.

While not as fast to mount/remove as the iMagnet, it is much more secure. I place it in the lower left corner of the windshield so I can easily see google maps / waze but not be in my line of sight looking forward. And since it is secure, I can actually use Android Auto to quickly reply to txt or email (at a stop light of course ;) ) whereas the iMagent (even with older/smaller phone) often resulted in my knocking it off and it falling to the floor.

RAM Mount is my vote - doesn't block the air vents, great positioning for viewing/driving, and doesn't block CD tray (I do in fact still use that archaic technology) or nearby console buttons.

I wish Toyota would join the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto movement. Toyota is smoking something if they think they can build an infotainment system as well as Apple and Google.

Just got this guy in the mail. Good stuff. The magnet is quite the skookum choocher. My S7 attached without the extra metal pad, just not super well so I put the extra metal pad on the back. I'm thinking of pulling it apart and filling the innards with gorilla glue to stiffen the thing. Apparently some Amazon reviews had their units cracking when tightening.

I've been using a Proclip console mount with RAM 1" components tied to an iOauto magnetic mount for my iPhone 7+.

Looks like this from the driver's seat:

Does not intrude into the passenger's area, does not interfere with the cup holders, and leaves full access to the console controls. I like it a lot.

How does the ProClip hold up offroad?

Dealer buddy told me the '19 Avalon has Apple Car play (haven't confirmed myself).

Very well so far. Not only are there mechanical connections at the top and bottom of the ProClip mount, there is also some double-sided tape to assure nothing drifts out of place.

I’ve been using a similar one for a couple of years with great luck. Holding up great. I taped the magnet to my phone’s cover. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUIL310

STEELIE. Small metal sphere sticks to dash. Phone has a concave magnet that holds phone. Very small and it is by far the best solution for a phone holder.

He is correct. That was announced at the Detroit Auto Show in January. That is a very big deal because Toyota had made statements that they wouldn’t support Apple Carplay, due to not wanting to lose control over driver data. So it seems that Toyota has finally accepted that customers want Apple CarPlay.

I expect it to become available on other Toyota vehicles over the coming years.

I can’t imagine Toyota will ever see fit to update existing $80k flagship vehicles with Apple CarPlay, but it would be nice. I’d promise to reduce the amount of swearing at my headunit if they did....

I bypass the head unit's limitations entirely about 99% of the time using Sirius iPhone app, and Apple's Music service...plus radio station apps when needed. This gets me pretty much anything, including local radio stations via other apps that I simply play through a bluetooth adapter. My head unit screen remains off except for adjustments and all is right with the world. :)

This is what I came up with. I bought this magnetic mount about a year ago based on a post from Woody, for my other truck but never got it installed. Last fall I fabbed up this quick mount with a scrap piece of 16ga steel. The magnet is super strong so it's really easy to use, I can just drop the phone on it and the metal disc on the back of the phone snaps right on and the phone doesn't move... Until I shift into Park and I bump the phone, then it flies off and tumbles into the passenger footwell.

I rarely use it, only if I'm doing navigation or using Torque, so it's fine for me. It's held in place with super strong double stick tape, with one 14ga sheet metal screw into the thin plastic as a backup.

This is the only place that I found will work for me. I wanted to be able to glance at my phone without looking away and also be able to mount it portrait or landscape. I previously tried the one that mounts on the vent but found it annoying since the phone keeps swivelling left and right.
