Recently noticed wet carpets in the passenger foot well of my 97 lx450. I did the most obvious and easiest thing, which was silicone the crappy seal on the sun roof. It might have been excessive, but it is a small price to pay for a dry interior!

Unfortunately, it's raining again today and there is more water in the c carpet. Aside from the seal in the sun roof has anyone encountered random leaks? And how did you fix them?

Thank very much in advance

Another typical leak is the windshield. Look for water near the corner in the seal, or look under the dash for evidence of water leaking from higher up to the floor.

I think the windshield is a good bet.

I just spent 30 min with a hose on top of the sunroof and there was no water in the column or foot well.

I will try with the hose in the corners of the windshield and investiage again.

Thanks for the help!

Jamie.

Well, I went all out today to look for the leak as all previous silicone attempts on the sunroof and windshield had failed.

After tearing out the seats and the carpets, I experimented with the garden hose.

Turns out that the water is running over the hood, into the engine compartment, and down onto the foamy insulation pad, soaking it, then somehow running into the interior. At this point, I cant see exactly where its coming in and I am not really willing to remove the foam pad as it looks like a pain in the arse.

For now, I am going to try buildup the gasket into the engine compartment and create a better track to diver water to the perimeter of the compartment.

Of course, I welcome any other thoughts!

I just started experiencing a leak on the driver's side foot well. How did your solution work out?

I'm new to this site and also new owner of a '91 FJ80. Noticed the same thing Keith R said with mine the other day. It was raining and noticed water dripping from under the dash on the driver's side left inclined foot rest. This inevitably will need to be fixed as I live in the Pacific NW where we see this wet stuff often. Should I start under the hood and look at the firewall for areas that may need to be sealed?

Last weekend I checked my sunroof drains by pouring water down them. Everything flowed properly. I replaced the window seals several months ago, so I thought I may have done something wrong. I poured buckets of water on the door, around the mirror, and on the windshield. Still no leaks.

Now we've had 2 hard days of rain and I still don't have a water leak. I assume I didn't shut my door all the way the last time we had a hard rain and that's how water made it's way to the driver's floor board.

If I develop another puddle and end up finding out the cause, I'll post what I found here.

BJC - Good luck. Maybe your leak is the price you're paying for living in the awesome PNC. ;)

Just to add to the conversation - I was chasing the same problem for quite some time. None of the "usual suspects" were my problem. It only happened when it rained - but only when I was driving, not when the truck was just sitting parked and a storm hit.

I eventually figured out when looking at a buddy's truck that I was missing the grommet that goes in the hole where the A/C evaporator drains! I didn't even know there was a part that was supposed to go there aside from the nipple to allow condensation to drain.

Ordered the part, put it in, and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks for the reply Keith. Looks like cruiseorlando may have the solution with the a/c evaporator plug missing? Going to go locate that now. Thanks guys. Really enjoying FJ80 ownership.

^^^ A/C drain is in passenger side, not drivers ... sorry to say my cure isn't for a DS leak - more FYI for someone having similar issues on PS.

DS issues are one of three things. One, sunroof drains. Two, windshield leaks. Three, missing grommets sealing the body under the carpet. The last is probably the most obvious of the three if you pull the carpet back.

lettereleven, just as an FYI,once you find your front leak you might want to check and see if your sliding windows are leaking too. Leaking rear windows seems to be a common problem with these trucks. I found out that mine were leaking when i removed the rear side panels to get at my tail light wiring. All you need to do is open up the side panels, if it's been leaking you'll know. You will be able to see stains, and where the water has washed the dust off.
