Hello All

I was wondering if any of you could help identify this weird noise. It seems to be most prevalent when the it is cold. I tried to record the sound the best I could.

I think it might be transmission but not sure.

Thanks in advance.

Check underneath. Sounds like scraping. Look at the drive shafts and brakes.

it sounds like it may be cycling at the same rate as the tires. If that seems right to you then it rules out anything from the driveshafts to the engine (if it was driveshafts it would sound like its happening 4 times for every one tire rotation)

If the above is true then I ask you if your parking brake works? Do you have an ABS fault light on?

Sometimes the internals of the parking brake fail and get stuck to the ABS sensor, they can cause a scraping noise. Also have you recently checked your brake pads? Worn out pad can cause this sound.

if it gets more pronounced when you turn one way or another then I would definitely check your brakes, if thats not the culprit then suspect wheel bearings.

This has been going on for a while and I did replace the calipers/pads/rotors and the drive shafts are 2 yrs old. I also pulled the rear drums and look at the shoes. I did not see anything that would cause this particular noise. Since it is a 91 FJ80 there is no ABS sensors. I have to redo my knuckles again because the passenger side is leaking, so I guess I can check the inside of the knuckles for any wear, but it sounds like it is coming just below the shifter. And nope it does not get worse when I turn in either direction. It is noticeably worse when the rig is cold compared to when it is hot.
