I've had my 1977 FJ40 for over 20 years and recently broke a birfield for the first time. Last year I switched from 33" to 35" tires which I'm sure played a role (along with my right foot). I plan to install a Longfield 30-spline super set along with his inner hub gears. I've had the same Warn hubs the entire time with no problems. Now that the birf won't be the weakest link is it worth it to also switch to Aisin hubs? Also, I read that the 1977 has an odd birf size that will affect which hub will fit. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I would,
Aisin's are stock and they are stronger.

The Longfield birfs are a conversion to the later, shorter, more common birfield and will require the later hubs. In fact, they are only guaranteed if you use Aisin hubs and Longfield hub gears. Just tell Bobby what you're doing and he can sell you the complete setup. I don't know if his hubs include the cone washers, but you need those from somewhere and perhaps a snap ring (?) as well. Ask him.

?? Since when does the warranty require Asian hubs?

And Asians are not required to make Longfields work.

Aisins with Bobby's collar hands down!

Hi All:

Yes, the 1976-78 Land Cruiser Birfields are longer than the later Land Cruiser Birfs. But the later Birfs can be used with Warn lock-out hubs.

Bear in mind that the splines at the lock-out are 27 spline on stock Birfield joints. Longfield sells both 27 spline and 30 spline "super" Birfs. Longfield also sells Aisen lock-outs with a custom 30 spline drive gear to work with the super set.

Regards,

Alan

Thanks for the info guys. I spoke with Bobby and he said I would probably be good to go with his 27-spline birfs as I have 35" tires. He also recommended the Aisin hubs but unfortunately doesn't have any. He said that since his birfs are shorter than my OEM's I could use the hubs off of any Toyota truck with IFS. Before I go to the junkyards, is there anything else I should be looking for? Any particular vintage better than others? Thanks.

IF you're going with IFS hubs you will need his hub gear as the spline counts are different between ifs cv axles and solid axle birfields. The body and rest of the assembly are the same however. Plus with the cost of most of the aisin hubs, it would probably be cheaper to go with an ifs set and the hub gears. Anyway pretty much any ifs pickup from 84-95 should be fine. Don't know about the newer ones.

I was just re-reading this old thread and I want to point out that this info is not correct. The 27 spline part of a stock axle is where the axle goes into the birf, not where the birf goes into the lock-out. The axle shafts are 30 splines at the spider gear and 27 splines on the outboard end. The birfs are 27 splines at the 'bell' end, or the female and 30 splines where they go into the lock-out or drive plate; the male end.

The Longfield 30 spline super set is 30 splines in the stock locations, as well as the outer male end of the axle shafts and the inner female end of the birfs.

Longfield sells both 27 spline and 30 spline "super" Birfs.

In reference to the input side of the birf, this is correct. At the locking hub, both types are 30 splines.

Longfield also sells Aisen lock-outs with a custom 30 spline drive gear to work with the super set.

All Aisin/Asco hubs are 30 spline. The Longfield drive gear is the same as stock, only made out of chromo.

Make sense?

i thought the aisin hub was 27 spline stock...and thats the reason you have to buy the hub gear with the 30 spline longs

Can anybody explain the differences between the Aisin and the Warn hubs, and why the one is "better" than the other

The best way is to hold them in your hand and look at the obvious signs of quality in the Aisin hub.

The body is steel, not pot metal.

The machine work inside is cleaner and more exact.

The cone washer attchment is way more secure and strong.

The Aisins are slightly shorter as well.

The engagement is only 1/4 turn.

Overall, it's just a better made hub. There can be retrofit problems unless you swap to the later knuckle and associated parts.

As said, solid axle Aisin hubs are 30-spline.
Bobby's hub gears are 30-spline, but chromoly.
IFS hubs are 26-spline, but Bobby sells a 30-spline conversion hub gear.
Solid axle hubs are getting harder to find. IFS hubs are a nickel a dozen.

So how many splines are on the stock FJ60 Aisins? I have a set of FJ60 knuckles et al for a disc brake conversion, but haven't disassembled them yet.

30 splines
