Its an older style 8274...

I use it a few times a month here and there. It always has worked fine despite being a little louder than most 8274s Ive been on the trail with. I was winching my fj62 project around back and the winch just cut out on me only after a few seconds of pulling.

When I try to spool in or out all the winch does is click. Does this mean its a fryed motor or selniod? depending on which one it is the only fix is to upgrade to the newer motor and selniod pack, correct?

Thanks for all the help,
-Al

Try cleaning all the connections to the selenoids and to the winch motor, sometimes they just get arched up and the carbon deposit from the arching acts like an insulator. Even if it's not the problem it can't hurt, cheers, Larry

I'm not that familiar with the 8274 motor, but if the brush housing at the end of the motor comes off, check that there the surface between them is clean and arc-free. Might want to seal it with dielectric grease.

I've had a recurring problem with my 9000i Warn because of that interface...

Lowtide-I would hot wire the motor first to confirm it spins. It probably does. My guess is a solenoid in the box has died. If it's an old style solenoid, they are quite hard to find, and Warn no longer carries them.

One bad solenoid would cause it to fail in one direction, but two would have to be bad for it to fail both in and out. Not as likely to have two solenoids fail at the same time.

Hot wire the motor to make sure that it runs before you replace solenoids.

Check your pin connectors first. Wiggle them and then clean them. My 1976 version 8274 does that once in awhile. i jsut unplug it and plug it back in or wiggle pin connector.

After I cleaned the connector, I lubed it up with Di-electric grease. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. Also check you battery cable connections both at the battery and at the solenoids. I have had ny cable go bad on the battery end because of corrosion in the wire itself.

Do you have a ground cable from the winch motor to your battery?

Yulp, a big ol fat one.

I'll hot wire the motor to see if thats the problem.

Thanks again.
