Last fall I bought an older Warn 8274 and found it needed a solenoid replaced. WHen I emailed Warn about it they recconeded I replace the whole control pack:
Matt,
If you can find them anymore they are the old 2040 solenoids. We stopped producing winches with those solenoids about 15-20 years ago and stopped offering that solenoid about March of 2006 when the solenoid manufacturer discontinued them.

You other option will be to replace the complete control pack with the updated version 38845.

I've looked for the 2040 solenoids without much success- surely they are available somewhere? Anyone have a source for me? Price?

Thanks!

Matt

Best option is a new control pack. It bolts right up. That's what I did.

I did see the solenoids are available here: http://www.dbelectrical.com/winch/winch.shtml#warn

Scroll down, $16.95 each, you need 4. Some people say you can use Ford starter relays, but they are not rated for contimuous duty.

or just go to your local truck parts place, and ask for a continuous duty solenoid, there's a generic one, blue/yellow box, name eludes me right now...

aha! cole hersee is the brand

I don't know, thought I think if you letthe auto parts place know what you're doing, they'll probably have some input. the one I bought looks just like that, but I don't know what the ratings are, I just took what the guy told me would work. I was under the impression that it being cont. duty is the key part.

Heres another option maybe, you west coast Guys will know what I'm talking about ( truck wise ). I also have an older model, that needs some replaced. My brother has a dump truck with a transfer body trailer, that basically uses the same concept. To get the trailer dump body into the truck one it uses a winch type arrangement, which I think would be considered " continious use ", as it takes a few minutes to move either way. I know I've looked at some of his spares, they look simular. Al

I just bought one from D&B. It looks like it will work and for $16 is worth a shot I guess. I really need to get this 8274 working so it isn't just an ornament on my truck.

Up until today, my 8274 hadn't been operating at 'normal' mode for a couple of years. Late last year I upgraded the motor with the new Warn 4.6HP which ran about $175 delivered to my door. Install was quick, easy, and a direct bolt-in. I was still having issues with intermittent cutouts - thought it was the wiring from the battery so I replaced it with heavy-duty welder wire (#0 or #2 - don't remember).

Finally, last week I tested the solenoids for action - all four where clicking when I applied 12v to the 'S' terminal but the clicking ranged from light to heavy. After doing a little research on Mud as well as Google, I ordered 4 new solenoids from www.rockauto.com for $77 delivered to my door. Part number for the 8274 solenoid replacement is ss581x. Pulled the winch apart today and replaced the solenoids as well as the cross-over wiring between the solenoids.

Buttoned it all up and now the 8274 operates as it should - good line pull with a solid continuous response.

I also found a pretty good writeup on fully-reconditioning a 8274 in the 'tech' section on Pirate - http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/8274/

HTH.

24V 8274 winches actually use 12V solenoids. I found that out when I converted my nissan patrol from 24V electrics to 12V.

Basically in the 24V control box each pair of solenoid control inputs are wired in series (2 x 12V), while in the 12V control box the pair of control inputs are wired in parallel.

So, all you need for your 24V 8274 are 12V solenoids - EXCEPT, the 2 bottom solenoids are DIFFERENT than the 2 top solenoids. The top 2 solenoids have 2 control inputs AND the case of the solenoids are common to the negative control input. The bottom 2 solenoids have 2 control inputs AND the case of the solenoids are ISOLATED. Subtle difference, but something to be aware of.

You can read a few more details of the hookup on my 24v-12v conversion writeup - just scroll down to the 8274 conversion (installed a 12V motor and re-wired the solenoids). http://www.george4wd.taskled.com/mq2412.html

cheers,
george.
