I did some research, and mind you this is generalizing a bit. But warn is more or less using two or three motors and achieving their ratings via gear ratio. Like i mentioned before, it appears warn is using the 70865 in several industrial winches with different load ratings.
The specs and parts numbers are available directly from warn

I have had the 70865 on my 8274 for a few years now. I recall it came off a 15k or 16k winch that warn sells. It works great, but I have no basis of comparison to the 9.5 motor, or the og motor.

What I do know is that it's fast, it's powerful, and I wouldn't want anything else on the front of my truck.

It'd be fun to tether two of these winches together, one with the 70865, another with the 9.5, and see which one pulls harder, lol.

It's happened a few times now where I've had to winch my truck up over an obstacle, while I'm towing another truck, and my 70865 doesn't skip a beat. I've got the integrated thermal disconnect wired in too, and it's never tripped, not even doing dumb s***.

Looks like either one is a huge upgrade. A side by side comparison would be nice though. Even if someone took pics, weight and dimensions of two motors on the bench.

I'm sure Warn had a reason to pick the 9.5 motor over the 15K motor for the newer version of the 8274. All we can do is speculate though.

Less cost to manufacture?

My old Prestolite motor on the 8274 gave out recently so I was looking for a replacement today.

Here’s what I found:

Western Motors Service Co. - http://old.wms1.com/wms1/

I reached out to WMS (Western Motor Service Company) today and here was their reply:

“The Warn 8274 motor should be our W-8941.

The diameter of the shaft is 0.669 inches or 17mm. Let me know if the shaft on your old motor is a different diameter. The W-8941D motor is $184.75 plus shipping cost.

We also make a 4.8 HP version of the W-8941D motor. The W-7641 is longer and has longer field coils and armature core. The cost is $249.25 plus shipping cost. The W-8941 has a 6 inch long body. W-7641 motor body is seven inches.

If you want to upgrade the pinion gear then you can get a 20 spline.

I called and spoke with Rick. He used to have a ‘70’s FJ-40 that he sold in HI. He’s a extremely knowledgeable guy to talk to. Their motors are assembled in house. They have a 1 year warranty. They do not warranty motors that have been misused, burned up, abused, etc.

Has anyone used the WMS W-7608 rated for 6 HP at 1850 RPMs? Which appears to be comparable to popular upgrade on the 8274 with the Warn 9.5XP 6HP motor.
