Hi,

I have 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser 4.7 V8 with around 61k miles on it, I've recently got it fully serviced.

But it has developed some problem, as the car is started and left at idle in gear it shakes and vibrates, not too much but is noticeable once at the driver seat. Once the gear is shifted to neutral or parking the vibration disappears. Every time I stop at the traffic lights with foot on brake pedal the car vibrates again i.e when ever stationary and in gear.

I have changed the Spark plugs and checked all the ignition coils by changing them over for the new ones and it still hasn't made any difference, it drives well and starts well though!

Any comments or help on this would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Engine mounts broken ? but that wouldn't seem to be effected by the gear.

What was involved with your recent service? Did the proem surface immediately after? If they replaced parts, were they oem?

The fuel injectors might need a clean, had mine done and it idles smoother.

Mine does this too, been trying to figure it out, but as of yet no go. Tried plugs and wires, wasn't it, looked at the ground and seems to be fine. You can actually see vibration coming through the hi/lo range gear selector.

i was experiencing something very similar until i cleaned the mass airflow sensor and throttle body. buttery smooth now. not sure if that is your problem but worth a try and will only make your truck feel nicer.

Interesting, as we are experiencing the same thing (sometimes) with our Mazda. (The 100 is just fine, thank you very much.) If it is the same as what I have been seeing with our other car, it almost seems like a harmonic vibration in the whole car when idling and in gear. The idle feels like a lower frequency than when in park.

Is this what you are describing?

Any resolution on this? I'm having the same problem when idling in gear - RPMs are ~600 and the car has a low drone/vibration. Bugging me now - it's noticeable to anyone else in the car, you can hear and feel it, but again only when idling in gear (D or R).

I think this is a very common issue on the 100's... TSB's describe this issue as a "booming at idle". I believe the big counterweight bolted to the frame is Toyota's attempt to "fix" this issue. My '02 does it sometimes as described... it's pretty annoying. I'm going to clean the throttle body as well as the MAF as mentioned previously. If it cures the harmonics, awesome... if not, I'll have clean components.

Well - only reason I'm concerned is b/c I recently flushed the transmission fluid and the vibration drone seemed worse afterwards. I double checked that the level is correct and I used WS ATF the correct fluid for my vehicle. So, if nothing else had changed I wouldn't be as concerned, but I want to be sure it's not a tranny issue etc.

I also had noticed that my front license plate cover was loose and after tightening that up I got less vibration, but still there and now just deep/boom/drone. I also did 5 tire rotation and noticed that part of the boom at idle TSB is to loosen the spare, move it as far to the back of the vehicle as possible, and retighten so perhaps that's contributing. Also, I have noticed rust along the exhuast on some of the clamps holding it to the frame so perhaps that's contributing as well.

Initially I was more concerned b/c I was looking at the Toyota version of the idle at boom TSB and my LX's vin weren't included. Then I realized there's a separate Lexus TSB and my vin is included so I'm gonna plan to take it to the dealership (the tsb resolution is involved).

So, I'm really hoping it's the idle at boom :-) I can live with that (although hopefully they can fix it).

I considered it might be engine mounts but have seen the observation that if it's in gear only then it's probably not engine mounts 'cause that would be an issue even in N or P. Don't know if that's true (if it's a specific frequency that is resonating then I could see that since rpm is slightly different in gear than not in gear even if it's the engine mounts perhaps it would only resonate at the 'in gear' rpm...).

See how nuts this drone/vibration is making me?

Mine drones, I turn up the air con or radio. Gets annoying sometimes. I have thought about adjusting the idle speed up 100rpms since it goes away if I lightly "boost" the revs while stopped, I rarely do it. But constantly going from N to D in stop go traffic seems really hard on the trans.

Anyone find a solution to this problem because I am having the same problem. The LC is fine when I start up and put it in either park or neutral. But when it's in gear and stopped, I feel vibration, not too bad but sometimes enough to shake the coins. It's really annoying, bought my 03 LC used w/ 88k and hoping to get at least 250k.

I have this same issue and it drives me nuts. I tried to find where it was coming from today but to no avail. It only happens in drive and when the circled part turns on. I take it that is the AC compressor. I checked the cats and I don't think that is the problem, I also checked the engine cover and I don't think that is the issue either... I think it's somewhere deeper.

No one has dealt with this and successfully fixed it? Would a sound clip help?

Come on guys!!!

Ok guys - this was started in 2010 and so you must have found a solution by now, or otherwise just drive the car around with this noise?

I have a early 2002 Amazon 4.7 petrol and I have EXACTLY the same noise.

Only does it in gear when stopped (or near as dammit), and it sounds like a lumpy idle. However take it out of gear and it stops. Car drives 100% a-ok apart from this lumpy noise/vibration when stationary.

Revs sit at 600, and if you nudge them up a little to 650-700 then the lumpy noise stops completely.

So, why's it doing this, and how do we solve it??

Assume one of you guys must have found the solution?

Help much appreciated!!!

Take the plastic engine cover off and see if it goes away, if it does either leave the cover off or pack out the 4 mounting points with rubber grommets or shims.
