After 20 years of Armstrong steering, I'm seeing powersteering in the future. At a crossroads...
Saginaw or Landcruiser...
What parts do people have?
55 series steering column... (or another option rather than cut and weld).
4 1/4 turn 4 bolt Saginaw steering box.
60/70 series Landcruiser steering box.
Any of you have comment on 60 series box on a 40?

What size tires are you running? I have a saginaw box in mine and don't even have it hooked up yet... but it is MUCH easier to turn just based on the geometry.
I know Vern has mini truck steering which seems like a good simple install for those who don't have huge tires and don't want to do a considerable amount of fabrication.
I would expect at least 2 days to install saginaw steering if you've never done it before. I used the "kit" from cruiser outfitters which came with pretty much everything you need to do the frame mount/steering shaft modifications. There is 1 spot where you need to weld to the steering shaft otherwise it is bolted together for the shaft and has a slip yoke. It comes with the front frame plate and a piece of pipe to use when you cut your cross member as well it comes with some thick tubing to put between the frame plate inside the frame. I had to buy a bit more tubing as I didn't have enough.
For the mini truck steering I think you just need a bracket, pump, box and its almost a bolt in? Vern do you remember?

Yeah I plan on doing mini truck to mine, (mini truck is really close to what the stock setup on a 42 is like, still a ridiculous number of TRE's and linkages to add slop, and scrub tires on driver side.)
Depends how lazy I'm feeling at the time, but I might go with 60 set up . But part of that is just for ease of mounting the pump on the engine.
Having a 350 already, sag is probably the way to go, as the gm pumps will just bolt on.
There's actually a lot of options for GM style ps boxes, most common used seems to be from an old Impala, ( out the front like steven's )but there's also Scout boxes, and I've heard of people using ones from I think Astro Vans?
I think the astro ones bolt inside the frame rail. Could be wrong there, but worth a look.
I suppose easiest of all would be mini truck box, and gm pump...not sure how much the toyota box would like that tho...

Ya the saginaw box is great... I love it... its also nice and simple once its done. but that said it took a fair amount of work to do. If you want a quick easy swap then I think minitruck is good.
The mini truck was pretty simple and i run 33's and it works fine other than extra tre slop. The only thing i bought was the bracket and a belt the rest i scrounged for zip. I used everything from the mini truck,the box,hoses,pump, reservoir and idler pully. The only thing i had to fab was a bracket for the top left front of engine to mount the pump to. If anyone want to duplicate the box bracket i could strip it off to use as a template as long as you don't leave me stranded for more than a week or so.
what year range of mini truck has the right box?
I may have to start my slow scrounge for free s*** soon....

I'm planning on keeping 33x10.50s. I've pretty much ruled out Minitruck... Even though it's the easiest.
I'm thinking either Saginaw like Stephen's or 60 series. I like the ongoing parts availability of the Saginaw 800 boxes... But 60 series looks so much easier.
60 series looks like a scab plate (or two), some tube, a steering shaft, some inner fender trimming (If I had any), and modification of the shock tower. I'm planning on running a Chevy pump... So it'd require a custom high pressure line.
Scout box... I'm concerned about parts availability down the road...

79-84 4WD I believe.
I'm not sure how that is much less work than a sag box.
I still don't understand why you're eliminating mintruck as an option?

I could use one of those silly little conical air filters if someone has one.
Will work until I figger out a better air box solution.
Also, I have the stock exhaust from my 42 up for grabs. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good, would certainly get you through a couple years. From manifold to tailpipe.

bikesmurf.... the rebuild kit for a scout 2 box is only $72 from scoutparts.com
still alot of scout groups just like cruiser heads down in the states... i wouldnt worry to much about availability of parts..
wonder how much a rebuild for a 60 series steering box from toyota costs...

I saw that. Guarantee a Toyota one costs more. And a Scout II Saginaw box will be more straightforward with the SBC.

saginaw is the only one that you have to cut your front crossmember on the frame to work... but you already knew that... just make sure you reinforce that crossmember .. seen them crack all the way around without any reinforcement..
and look for a 4 and 1/4 turn... anything lower and you will be changing lanes really quick..
good luck on the conversion... post up some progress pics when you start

Oops,,, by Saginaw, I was meant Scout II Saginaw... Not impala one. I'd rather not cut through the frame crossmember and mess with all that.

2f accelerator cable.. 70 to 73 used a cable... and mine broke... and every bike store i talk to says they dont make custom cables anymore.. and toyota says they dont make them anymore...

I used to get cables made up for drivers with disabilities and driving school cars but everyone quit doing it for liability reasons but i am sure there must be someone in town doing it,i would call a driving school or war amps to see who does their work now.
