So the time has come to pass the torch. Been a fun time but it’s just not getting the use it once did and the family has other needs. I am trying to figure out how much to list it for and I understand this is the forum I should ask. I would love to have opinions but I would certainly prefer private messages with any actual dollar values.

1978 FJ40 located in Owings Mills, MD

All the running gear, frame, etc., is 78. The doors, rear portion of tub, and hard top are 1973 I believe. This is all documented in the build thread I have listed below.

Backstory – I bought this one from a Mud member, who had bought it from another Mud member who did the original rebuild. That rebuild thread is located here:

Hoz 78 FJ40 Restoration

I have had it now for four years and in addition to regular maintenance, odds and ends, etc., the following has been done/added since I have had it:

Old Man Emu 2.5” lift kit – springs, shocks, shackles, steering stabilizer

33” BF Mud terrains

Trollhole Custom Top

Bowkit from Real Steel Cruisers

RE Audio Bluetooth Marine Amplifier – head unit free

Bose Speakers

New front disk brakes – calipers and pads

New brake master cylinder

New rear brakes

New wheel cylinders

Concealed interior led lighting

Misc. - Rear step, dash pad, license plate frame, window seals, knuckle job, rear cargo mat, harnesses for jump seats.

I have been tackling a set of items every year but like any FJ40, I never got through all of it. There are minor leaks on the side panel, transfer case, etc. There was an exhaust leak that I had repaired but I am not sure is 100% gone. Steering box also leaks but drives fine, idles fine. Original carb/manifold setup with smog, etc. As far as rust, the frame was POR coated (or some equivalent) by original builder. There is a quarter sized spot on the hood where paint had chipped and a couple small areas where there is a little bubbling. This is always a hard thing to quantify but I looked at many FJ’s before I bought this one and this one appeared to me to be in much better condition on the rust front than all the others I saw. I am sure there are a million things that others may wish to improve of course.

It has been garage kept since I have owned it and it was garage kept by the prior owner. It always starts and runs great. I have taken in on drives of near 150 miles with no issues. Even with the 33’s it drives very straight and has no problems at highway speeds. I have a hard top, however I haven’t put it back on in years since I got the trollhole soft top made, which has been awesome.

As far as technical questions, I am happy to address whatever questions people have, however I make no claims to be as knowledgeable as a lot of people on this forum. In a former life I was a much better mechanic than I am now and most of that is due to lack of time. Frankly, I have had to come to this forum more times than I can count for help to make proper decisions. I was able to get this FJ off of the forum and I would certainly like to give someone else the opportunity before I have to put it on craigslist or something. At the same time, like anyone, would like to get the best value I can. I am including as many pictures as possible, but if there is some portion I have not photographed, just let me know and I am happy to post.

I am sure I am forgetting something but what else is new.

Thanks again and I certainly appreciate it.

Don't make it worse than it already is!!! I have been dragging my feet on this for some time now.

That's a nice looking truck, but it sure is a conglomeration of many years. I'm not seeing a lot of '78 in there besides possibly the engine and emissions.

Thats 25- 30k all day... (my humble opinion)

Must have been an early 73 pre buckets?

The build thread had a 72 donor and appears even the frame may be 72. Complete tub I believe is 72. 78 had a brake seat belt light in the dash. This looks like the original turn signal indicators light hole are still present. Vent in the cowl was gone by the 77 model. Rear tail lights are pre 74. Arpons look like from 72. If it doesn't have a hood release in the bib at the top of the bezel it's probably 72 as well. I think back dating a vehicle hurts more than updating. 72 titled would help those in CA and maybe other states. Looks like a nice rig but is a driver more than a collector which hold value.

It's titled as a 78 and would refer to the build thread for which body parts came from what year. I wouldn't say one way or the other if body parts are 72 or 73 or 74 as I know this group is far more knowledgeable than I am. I can certainly edit the post to reflect that. PS - there is a hood release. The engine, transmission, transfer case, brakes, etc, I understand to be all 78. Definitely not trying to pass this off as a collector edition, frame off, stock cruiser. Only what it is and what general value the consensus thinks it has. I wouldn't say this is for the purist. I can say it runs great and has been a lot of fun for our family.

Is the vin # on the title the same as the A pillar tag and frame?

73+ had bucket seats without a toolbox. 73+ had a door for the fuel filler. The turn signal indicators on the dash not the speedometer face ended with the 72 model. Since the build thread says had a 72 donor can't see any reason it wasn't 72 used. The transmission tunnel is short on the 72 with a channel behind it. 73 was that same size as 78. It's clear the rear frame member is a aftermarket piece. If it was original would said it was 72 as well but being changed could be either 72 or 78. Was pointing out not being original a 72 might be better than a 78. There is a reason TLC only buys early FJ40 frames, VIN plates and titles. The Icon has no inspections to pass.

It’s not a 100% stock, original rig, but if there’s no bondo, rust cancer under the floor mats, or shoddy bodywork, it looks like a good, honest rig that would be a lot of fun to the non-nit-picker!

really appreciate everyone’s help. Seems that the consensus is 25 - 30 which was sort of my gut but I didn’t want to be out to lunch with it. Nothing hidden under floor boards or anything. I could actually pull the mats up with a little effort and take a picture. When I bought it I knew that body work was way beyond my pay grade so I wasn’t buying something with that in the first place. As far as the serials, I know it is the same on the A pillar, engine compartment and the title. Frame is coated in por15 so I can’t see any serial. It’s been titled in at least 3 states now. If anyone knows of anyone looking, I will probably list it shortly. I don’t know if I can do the eBay thing. Want it to go to a good home.

I personally would not spend 25 to 30K on a truck that has been pieced together as much as that one has. But, I'm generally under what people sell trucks for.

I see 10 to 15K and that is because the truck is red and shiny on the outside. The lack of bump stops, skidplate, low exhaust, frame rust concerns, cut out fenders (no clue why) steering needs all new rod ends (no boots left), leaky everything, etc.. Yes I am being nit picky, but for 25 to 30K I want more than just a shiny paintjob.

As others have said... a number of years are in play... many ‘78 discrepancies... many “expected” parts are missing (as @Mace said)... also a couple more very obvious discrepancies:

‘78:
  • fuel filler has a locking door
  • Wipers are on bottom of windshield
  • Wiper motor is below windshield frame.
$25-$30k is at least $10k too much... but it sure is purty.
