i want to run headers on my v8 fj40 but don't want the fenderwell style. has anybody run the block hugger type? do the fit well? i have power sterring also and don't know. any advice along with pics would be great, thanks.

I run the huggers...Summit Racing, $80-100 or so....no complaints, BUT...

Given the choice, I'd spring for the cast ramshorns instead....common item on EBAY....

yea, i have the ones that go over the frame, and i think i wan to change them, as mine are rusty, and just take up so much room. i say just go for the summit ones. i think i am :D

I opted for block huggers as well since I didn't care to cut away part of the fender. In addition I get almost no cabin heat often associated with outside headers. As usual they need checking so they don't come loose but I've never had a leak.

My engine mounted 1 inch to the driver side which gives about 1/4 inch clearance to the steering shaft.

cast ram horns nice. I got em on 2 days after getting my 40 , 3 years , no probs, lots of room.

I ran Huggers on my 1970. Watch out for the clearance on the steering side. If your 350 isn't in far enough forward you'll hit the steering box.

At least mine did.

But they were a great add on. And definitely spend the $200 for a stainless exhaust with Dual Flowmasters. Rat-a-tat...Rat-a-tat...bring that beast to life!

I had ceramic coated blockhuggers that I took off in favor of the ramshorn manifolds because I had incredible underhood heat problems. I miss the headers sound, but performance wise I can't tell the difference between the two.

If you have a Saginaw or 60 power steering it's a non issue, but maybe if you have the factory or minitruck PS.

Thanks for all the replies. I have the rams horn now but I'm installing an edelbrock efi unit and the 'suggest' headers, i think i'll just stick with the rams. thanks again.

Semi hijack. Do you have pics?

eskimo - where did you get the x-over pipe? part#? Also, by chance, do you know if the pipe will fit up to "block hugger" headers like these:

another vote for the ramshorns.

AND, the $35 crossover pipe!

$35!!! Did your local muffler shop bend and weld that up for you?

I run block huggers on my 60, they are wrapped with cloth looking heat shield stuff and really run cool. I have a cross over pipe also. The only gripe is trouble keeping the bolts tight, but I understand there are special bolts for this.

i run pacesetter block hugger (good thick flange to keep warping to a minimum) and stage 8 header bolts...no problems with headers coming loose.

I use Sanderson ceramic coated block huggers. Used to have problems keeping them tight till I changed bolts.

we took the headers off my dad's 40 and installed ram horns. The headers just produced too much heat even with the header heat wrap and we really did not notice a drop in power. The enginge compartment is much cooler now.

This is a OEM replacement part. Ask Texican for the info.. He is the one who figured it out.
I run ramshorn manifolds. Never will go back to headers again.

What is a source for the ramshorns. Used vs New? Any specific model if picking them up used (off a vette vs a pickup?) Thanks.

Also running ramhorns. No complaints what so ever. Got mine new but check ebay. The prefered ones are the center dump ones. Search pirate4x4.com under Texican, I know he has given that part # a bunch of times for the cross over pipe. The guys that did my exaust just bent up their own, to bad they only half welded half of the joints.
