I am putting together parts for a rear tire carrier and looking to see what I have available to use in my before I buy parts.

I had an old trailer (haror freight / home depot) and I cut the hubs and axles off when I put a different axle under the trailer. What I have left is about 7 inches of the U channel axle welded onto a small 4 bolt axle hub. If I cut off the round circle for the bolt pattern, it looks like it would make a good surface to weld the carrier arm onto so that it swings out. Has anyone used something like this in place of a spindle? Good idea, bad idea?

iT IS A SPINDLE. Same thing. Works well. Cheap too. Plus bearings can be relatively easy to get.

I was thinking the same thing!!

I need to build a tire carrier for the '55 and the '60 since both will have long range tanks by the end of the summer of '09.

I've seen folks make mtg flanges for their spare tire carrier out of extra parts for their vehicle, using spindles, hubs, bearings, lockouts, etc. That way they carry some spare parts, and the tire spins too!!!

nice. Looks like I am going to have a project this vacation!

I still can't understand it, but I think that way all the time. So you have to do it and post some pics , then I will hopefully get it.

This is a 4x4 hub, but same principal....

I'll post some pictures of what I have to work with tomorrow. Always check to see what I have gathered and hoarded to see if I can actually use it for something. I can't seem to make myself take anything that might go into or work in some way with the 40.

You can source spindles at tractor supply stores for really cheap $$$. There are several vendors that also make swing out tire carrier assemblies....IPOR for one has a nice unit. I think I bought mine from solid rock off road, or slick rock...something like that.

hey dan look at caseys on his 40 same idea?

This is what I did.

Read up on welding cast material...

What better use can there be for a coarse splined stub axle and hub?
