Did you get your upgraded pump installed? If so where did you mount the relay?

This is another week I'm so glad I have that LRA 40 Gallon installed. It's like 8 full 5 gallon Jerry Cans!

Cat 3 arriving mid next week.

Hopefully we get assigned the A shift.

I got distracted after Amazon failed to deliver and haven't circled back.

I don't trust the Carter pumps due to reports of failures, and don't want to pay what Holly costs. I do want the 72 gpm of the Airtex but that particular model isn't readily available. I'd prefer to have something that is easy to find and swap out when it fails far from home.

I'd love it if someone sold a kit so I don't need to fiddle fart around chasing small parts. :)

I have a large gauge auxiliary power run to a fuse box in my cargo area, and the LRA harness runs behind the cargo panel on the same side. I was going to run an appropriately sized fused wire from my distribution panel to a relay in the jack compartment, with the power wire from the relay going down through the grommet in the floor out to the pump. That way I can easily grab the trigger wire coming from the switch in the LRA harness to trigger the relay.

Got my 24 gal LRA last week. Now trying to put together the rest of the stuff I need associated with upgrading the pump. This thread is helpful. I’m taking a shot at ordering the Airtex pump from Amazon. It said “available” and will be delivered the 28th. We’ll see.

I haven’t even opened the “box” the tank came in. I’m thinking I’ll have this installed by the same shop doing my gears and lockers but I want to make sure I’m providing all parts needed. Has anyone put together a parts list of all that’s needed associated with a pump upgrade? Also, it looks like there are some options with where and how to locate various components. Anything I should specifically tell the shop to do? If I were to DYI this, I’d go painfully slow and ask 100 Mudd questions as I considered every detail. That’s the main reason I’m going to have the shop install it. Just want it done.

I haven't done the upgraded pump yet, but I imagine that it comes down to upgrading the wiring providing power to the pump with a relay (use the power wire from the switch/guage as a trigger to the relay) and making sure that the fittings for inlet and outlet match the ID of the fuel lines provided by LRA. The pump delivered with the LRA comes with an inline fuel filter that I believe is absent on the other options, so it may be worth thinking through whether you want an inline filter (and if so, do you find a way to use the one that came with the tank or upgrade to a better filter).

Received Airtex pump today.

Unfortunalty it seems that the Airtex E84070N has been replaced by the Carter P4070 (claimed as same pump). Seems that Trico, owner of Carter purchased and merged Airtex into Carter in 2019; moved manufacturing from Illinois to Mexico.

Good to know. I ordered an Airtex from a different source the other day. What's left must be old stock.

I ordered an Airtex through Amazon, just received today. While the packaging label states Airtex, model E84070N, it also says made in China. Markings on the pump body give no indication of manufacture or county of origin. However, searching the number on the body, SP1130, pulls up Spectra Premium as the make.
I probably have a product worst than a Carter made in Mexico unit. In fact I just found SP's inferior specs:

Mine arrived the other day, and is also marked made in China. The pump itself is marked 4070BD 010721A-06. A google search brings this up as a carter pump. Maybe the boxes are all that is still Airtex? Also, the Carter seems to be rated at 50 gph, not the 72 gph of the Airtex.

Interesting.

My packaging was similar but the color of the unit is kinds a brass goldish color, similar to the older inline fuel filters.

My "SP1130" can in a similar box. Same shape and size, with same label except the box was all white (no printing on sides or Airtex on top. Label stated E84070N, made in chine etc., but was also where the name Airtex was placed and the label was overlaid on another label. Pump was stamped with the Spretra Premium brand model and designations and was a phosphorus gold color, caps over terminal lugs were little plugs (no cap like yours) and hose nipples had no thread protection. Your box looks a 100% more legit, your bags are also labeled and you have a pump body with a closer model number. As Airtex is now owned by Carter, I'm not surprised about the cross linking.

I may skip the drama and potential failures of Airtex/Carter/Lookalikes and go with a Holley Red Standard 12-801-1 (good for 97gph free flow; 71 @ 4 psi; draws only 2 amps) but may remove frame or add new, but does cost quite a bit more at $160

Where did you find the mean-time-to-failure listed for the Airtex and the Holley Red listed?
When I looked I could not find those numbers, though I know they exist.

Holley Red is running like a champ here. :)

It seems both pumps are not 100% and have issues.

I didn’t and we’ll never see enough data to produce suc; however, the old Airtex is no longer produced and now manufactured and sold under Carter (which does not have a great user reputation) and other’s such as Spectra Premium which claim they design in Canada and have manufactured overseas… but funny that their case is identical to the Airtex/Carter which are claimed to be designed in-house in US and manufactured at a Cater facility in US, Mexico or China.. someone’s website isn’t telling the whole truth. As I say, moving to Holley that at least has a better reputation.

Personally I’m getting sick of Amazon supporting vendors selling knockoffs. The issue is becoming more and more prevalent.

I got my Airtex fuel pump about three weeks ago from Amazon. I’ve been out of the country so I haven’t been able to look at it until this weekend. While I was away I will read the above threads on the Chinese made palms or other knock offs. I’m trying to determine if my pump is legit or not. It seems legit. The housing is stamped made in the USA, and the box looks legit. It came with install booklets. There are numbers stamped on the housing and he and the cast in loading outlet manifold. However I don’t get anything when I Google these numbers. The numbers are:
A040814 and 4070 4F25B.

I think I have the real deal here but how can you really tell?
