UPDATE May 28th, 2025 - @Poupon heads out to Queen NM to begin NMBDD (phase 2).
UPDATE April 8th, 2025 - @pappy/@TOYOTARIG to co-lead

Hey fellow HDC club members,

UPDATED May 28th, 2025

I finally got my truck back with most of Phase 4 completed. I am all packed up and heading towards Weed NM or Queen NM to spend the night somewhere near or on the trail Wednesday night May 28th. I am alone but happy to meet anybody that wishes to join. I am provisioned for 5 nights but may bail earlier, depending on how things shake down and the mood.

Cheers!
Poupon

Based on the progress of my phase 4 build, it is probable that things will not be sorted in time for me to lead the group on the 19th. However, Jon and Ron have both agreed to co-lead the start of the adventure - the trip is still on. But I am not planning to make it by the 19th. I am still going to try to catch up to the group, if possible.

As a moderator, @pappy is able to keep this intro message updated as we get closer to the event. Do let me know if you have any questions.

I have blocked of some time in April to do a portion of the New Mexico Back Country Discovery Route (AKA NMBDR) via overlanding/camp out. I hope that "phase 4" overhaul of my 200 series Land Cruiser will be mostly completed by this time. I only mention this because failure to get all the basics sorted for phase 4 may impact my ability to do this run. But Dom over at Adaptive Vehicle Solutions has high confidence that he will have most things sorted. Please consider this an initial notice.

My current thinking is to head south from ABQ on Wednesday April 16th Saturday April 19th and camp at a launch point Wednesday Saturday night. Then take it easy and cover some of the southern portions of the NMBDR, heading north over the following 4 or 5 nights. I am completely open to other options and don't mind doing the trail alone or with others. Doing a portion of the NMBDR does allow for those who may have restrictive availability to join late or peel off early since most areas of the trail are within hours of ABQ.

Do chime in if anybody would like to consider joining. I will keep this intro thread updated as this unfolds.

What is the NMBDR??
The NMBDR is a relatively easy, pre-defined, back country off road/gravel road trail system that spans approximately 1,200 miles across New Mexico. This trail system is an effective way to see the vast, diverse state of New Mexico and get back into remote areas that most never see.

It is a great way for those that have limited experience camping out of their rigs to learn what works for them and shake down their new set ups. This route is somewhat stock friendly. Most of the trails are made up of improved and less improved BLM/Forest Service roads and private roads. Ideally, you would have a low gearbox, AT tires, some skids/armor. You can also consider dragging along a small off-road trailer, if you are into the extra effort/challenges. Most of us use RTT but it is no problem to use ground tents as well.

I like to refer to this type of overlanding as "the dollar store" trail. Because most of the days you are passing through various towns, all with the provisions you might ever need or want. So it is forgiving for those that have less experience overlanding/unplugging or others that just want things to be easy.

Looking forward to a great time. Cheers!

Hey Larry!
Sounds like fun. I was wondering what is the furthest point south you will be driving to?
I will be starting the continental divide trail CDT, from the boot Heel of New Mexico near Hachita around mid April and possibly needing a ride to the trailhead at the Mexican border.

Maybe I can join them and get you down as far south as we can and then I’ll be with the group and not alone?

Let me see what I can do. I would like to run the NMBDR again.

Last time Ash, Pappy and I started the NMBDR, we met up outside of Weed, the beginning of the 2nd official segment. The official start point (AKA Section 1) is Dell City TX and I was thinking about starting at the official point to do ALL of the NMBDR. That may take me through El Paso on surface roads before turning east. It looks like Hachita would be 124 miles west of El Paso. What do you think?

@Poupon where is this launch point?

I checked my calendar and I can’t get away until the early morning of Thursday the 17th. Could meet in Weed on Thursday afternoon/evening. Didn’t want to go to Texas anyway!

Mesa Woman, that is a good plan..... to camp near the launch point Wednesday night. My current thinking is that we "launch" at the official NMBDR section 1 start - Dell City TX. I will look for a place to camp Wednesday night, hopefully some form of BLS/NF between El Paso and Dell City TX.

Is this trip a go? Getting ready to request time off of work.

So far, it is green and go for me.

There is still a chance that I will not be able to go, if the build does not allow. But like you, I have submitted my PTO request at work. I am sorry I can not be 100% sure. I plan to check in with Dom at AVS next Monday/Tuesday April 7/8th to get an update on the progress of the work.

I hope this helps.

Hey Stephen, as you may have noticed, I have pushed the start time out to Fri/Sat. Will this extended start time allow you to join us near Dell City at the "official" starting line?

Mesa man and I are out, we head south on Sunday 4/6.
Safe travels all and Happy trail adventures!

My plan is to come along if I can get the Tacoma all fitted out and it's looking like it's on track to be ready. I'll likely start at the NM1 to NM 2 intersection.

Yes, if I can get over my Texas phobia. Is anyone planning on caravanning down? I’m slow (65 mph) and even slower on the hills. If there are any other slower vehicles that are going do you want to caravan. I know all the V-8’s will roar down there as fast as they can.

I just realized Easter is on the 20th, I will have to catch you guys somewhere along the route later on the 20th or the 21st. Maybe we can meet closer to departure and I can figure out where you all may be?

Will we head down to the start point in Dell City on Friday the 18th or Saturday the 19th? Never mind I just read it further back in the thread. Saturday departure!
