The number is just what we have seen, in the relatively small number that we have installed and is likely low. That one looks new and we also got a new one out of a Denso 280-0169 box from Amazon this week. It's not unique to Amazon, most that we have installed came from local parts stores. My guess; when Denso runs out of cores, they assemble starters from new parts. Amazon doesn't do cores, so may have something to do with new ones being more common? Don't know that it matters, the Denso reman starters have been solid.

Agree on the Denso being solid. Put one on my cruiser about 4 years ago as a stop gap to get me through a trip till I could get the factory rebuilt. It's been flawless so far and has a lifetime warranty so if it fails I can swap it at my local parts store. May still get the factory redone eventually but it's down on the priority list at this point. Other Denso parts I've put on the cruiser have worked out well too.

factory rebuilt? I asked A Toyota VP from Japan that i meat in Toyota lunching the new LC he said that Toyota dos not do factory rebuilds; you can bay new Toyota starter it will cost you 1000$ and its made by Denso, who is doing thr factory rebuilt in USA?

Not factory rebuilt. There is an electric motor repair shop in town that says they can rebuild it. I just have to buy the replaceable parts from Toyota if I want OEM parts and they will do the rest. I already had put new contacts in it so think there is only one or two more pieces I need. They said they can replace the windings so should be good as new.

I did this twice and it worked for 6 months only

The original starter was made by Denso, so parts from Denso are OEM. You can buy Denso brand parts or Toyota rebranded Denso parts, other than packaging, same thing. Denso invented this type of starter, likely know as much or more about them as anybody, so safe bet to get a starter from?

My starter says Toyota 28100–66060 Denso 228000–3260 which I understand to be the 2kW version. Would this Denso work for me?

I replaced mine a while ago too, and if you notice there is a small QC stamp on the lower left side of the Denso sticker. Could be nothing, could be the difference between new and reman. But the one I got looked just as "new" as the one you have on the pics above.

The Denso 280-0169 is the "remanufactured" 2.0 kW starter, will work on all 1FZ motors. Denso 280-0168 is the 1.4 kW, if someone wanted that one, for whatever reason. Those are the only two available, the 2.2 kW is NLA.

Found a 2.2 KW off a 1993...kind of tough to find in decent condition these days. Will be rebuilding and restoring this beauty soon.

Thank you @Tools R Us

I've had pretty good luck getting Denso stuff through Amazon. You can always send it back if what shows up doesn't look like the pics in this thread. I put the 280-0169 on mine about a year ago and it looked just as "new" I bought mine from my local supplier though and turned in my 1.4kW as the core. FWIW I've never had a problem turning in cores when I upgrade something.. Even when I put 5th gen brakes on my 4th gen 4Runner I sent back the 4th calipers and not a peep. They typically just get sent back as general cores and sorted at the rebuild facility from what I understand.

Getting back to my baseline and this weekend's project is the starter. The Denso 280-0169 (https://www.amazon.com/Denso-280-0169-Starter-Motor/dp/B0015344UI)
...

Try this one: https://www.amazon.com/Denso-280016...EW/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=

Amazon price changes, we recently ordered one, was prime, ~$120 delivered, that doesn't look to be available now.

... is same price as Norwalk's after shipping (1993-1997 Toyota Land Cruiser Starter 28100-66060-84 | toyota-parts).

Any thoughts on which one to go with? The Amazon listing has no reviews...but sold by Stockwise Auto...I supposed I could call my nearest dealership but they seem to consistently be 25-35% more expensive even after shipping

You are comparing apples to peaches. Amazon doesn't do cores, so that charge is built into the price. For the same from the dealer link, would be ~$180 plus shipping. Anytime you are dealing with core return and shipping, to take advantage of the core, you are paying shipping both ways. Rockauto has it for $88.89 and $34.00 core, but both ways shipping. When we are returning a core, we deal local and can often come close to Rockauto price.

Got mine on Rock - Appeared to be brand new. Always google the 5% off Coupon

$96 after Core, even with $7 Shipping.

If old denso starter threads are being drug back, i need to point out - this is not correct.

while denso knows plenty about reduction starters and makes the best ones in world, Mitsubishi electric is the correction.
