... Duralast starters from AutoZone. ...

The last one I had apart didn't even have the gasket for the solenoid cover, no motor o-rings, breathers, etc. It was relatively new, one shallow water crossing put water in it, a few days later it wouldn't start, pulled it apart and the plunger was corroded, stuck. My guess, if the water hadn't done it, dust/dirt from wheeling would have packed it up sooner than later? Yep, lifetime warranty, but why would I want something that easy to kill, maybe if you don't wheel?

I replaced the contacts and plunger in my RN50 and it has been working great ever since. Do they not make rebuild kits for the stock one in an 80 series?

They do, just about every part is available for them, some just don't like to do the work, prefer to trust others work.

I've never had a failure of a Duralast starter. We actually get rain and snow up here, which creates mud. Ive had two reman Densos that failed. One in just a few days. I can swap out a starter in 15-20 min on a trail. Seems silly to worry about rebuilding one...

Never had a DOA Duralast one either. If people want to rebuild them that's fine with me. I'm just fine with swapping it out.

Conclusion:
Starter was never bad. Wire to starter was bad at battery terminal.
Was providing enough juice to activate solenoid, but not enough to turn over starter.
I replaced terminal ($3) and all is well.

The guys that said check voltage at starter were 100% correct.

Feel rather bad that I told Denso their starter was junk when it was fine.

Demanded my money back at the dealership and they gave me $55, and lost a customer for life.

FYI....If you order a Denso Reman from Rock this is what they send:

I'm very hard press to prove it is not new.

Once you have changed a few it's pretty easy, I think I have done 4 in my LC, until I got an OEM still running

Rain + snow = mud, who would have known? We live in a desert, so totally dry, our stuff never sees any moisture.:hillbilly:

Yep, everyone that we have gotten has had all of the correct seals and breathers. This is not the case with any of the other reman units that we have installed.

It would be a real easy job if you were Left Handed, I'm not.

Psssh, that's our normal drive to work...

Seriously, if I hadn't been butt puckering I would've taken video of me driving to a customer's house the other day. It was technically a "road" but the loosest definition of a road I have seen.

The customer had been trapped at their farm for over a week. They could've gotten out with a tractor, I suppose. We had snow then 50 degrees and rain. It was a mess.

I need a Go Pro or dash cam.

If having water on your hood is a normal, daily thing, why would you get butt pucker? One would think it would be :meh: by your age?
