If it's not one thing it's another,

Should I start looking for another torque converter?

I'm sure a local torque converter or transmission shop can repair that... At least I'd think so?

If i may ask, how did you trouble shoot that?

mine is broken off like that , i just noticed it actually. i am not 100% sure you need that, to me it just looks like an alignment dowel. might be a bit harder to get the trans and flex plate lined up without it ???

would like to hear other's opinions

Haha, I didn't troubleshoot it. I broke it off test fitting the torque converter to the 2fe I am rebuilding.

Just thought I would update this. I took the torque converter to a local machinist and he welded on a new stem and then turned it down to size so it is all good again. Sorry, no pictures but it looks pretty much the same.

I took my broken one to a trusted local machine shop and they wouldn't touch it . I ended up finding a used torque converter .

Almost forgot, that stem is referred to as a pilot. Our TC are usually identified by the numbering on them, I think it starts with an A. If you are going to get a used or rebuilt unit, bring in your flex plate bolts. If the code has been painted over, and the pilot matches, you could get the wrong year. The only difference is the bolt size. One is a 9mm and one is a 10 mm(cant remember what my 1997 size was). Also, it is alright if the pilot looks different but the code and bolt size match. Bring your micrometer with you to the TC shop and check the OD of the pilot. Toyota used something like 20 different styles in the 90s with at least 2 different styles on the later model LCs. Your pilot looks much different than mine.

With my reinstall, you may already know this, but for the forums benefit, when you reinstall the TC, you should feel/hear 2 thunks as you rotate slowly and gently push towards the rear of the truck. These thunks are VERY obvious. Little clicks or ticks should be ignored. If you don't get both, keep rotating and pushing. You should not be able to get your fingers behind the TC if it is in correctly. If you are unsure about what you've felt, pull it back off and start over.
