Well the radiant barrier will help but it has to go between the insulation and the roof decking, so you would have to pull the insulation back down...it does help a lot though....other solution is a fan or possibly two, air movement creates a lot cooler atmosphere than just a room with a/c....other thing is you may possibly have an undersized unit for the room, if possible you can shade the unit from outside and it will help its efficiency...

I'd prefer not to remove the current insulation to add a radiant barrier but it looks like I might have to.

The AC unit is rated for 250 sqft and the area is 276 sqft. It puts out a good bit of cold air. It is frigid at calf height but pretty darn warm at head height. That's why I think the heat is coming from the ceiling/roof. The roof is a metal roof it that matters.

There is basically no air movement upstairs. I've already thought about putting a small window on the opposite wall from the two current windows and AC unit to get some breeze going.

I'll do some research on radiant barriers...

Yeah it sucks having to redo something, lowes and home depot both sell a radiant barrier, it'll be in the insulation section....also did you put up the air vent between the insulation and roof deck, that will allow the roof to breath and let the hot air rise out of the ridge vent....I'd put in a fan before making another window. Marshall would be the expert on this, but I would almost put an oversized window unit in to get it extra cold, esp. with it being upstairs

The insulation was installed by a contractor b/c I basically got free labor. I either could have paid a guy to install insulation - or - buy the insulation for the same price (or a bit more) and install it myself. So, I had a contractor do the installation. I'm pretty sure there are not any air vents between the insulation and roof.

There isn't much insulation to remove to add a radiant barrier or anything else. I want to only remove and reinstall once so I'd like to get my ducks in a row first about what exactly I'll be doing.

I'm hoping to take the window unit out at some point this year and install an interior stand-up unit. I'm not a fan of having that window unit on the front of the garage.

I might have said it already but my goal by this winter is to have this area as a 'man cave' so I want to get the insulation right before I put up some sort of wood paneling.

Yeah most definitely, the air vents are also in the insulation section they are made out of the same material foam egg cartons are made of, they are 4' long and you staple them to the underside of the roof deck and that allows air to flow thru the soffit and up thru the ridge vent, keeps the moisture from building up and causing rot....was the contractor an insulation guy, if so he may have put them up there. Pull down a piece and you'll know real quick if they are there or not

He was an insulation guy. I'll check.

eastern dead snake if that was me!!

Yep definitely a brown snake, not sure if it's a rat snake, it only gets 13" long and most traditional rat snakes are much longer and black....when I searched it they didn't have anything about them climbing. Said they were the number one urban snake and like to live under mulch, he was very docile, when he came out he wasn't even startled by me....kept him for a few hours to let Henley get over some fears and then let him go in the woods

Old folks in Tennessee called it a brown garden snake. :) They would catch any they could find and put them in there gardens to help with critter control. Or so they said only critter they controlled that I knew about was me, I would not go back to that garden fer sure. :p
