Going all the way down to replace the ambulance door is a great idea.! That is the only reason i'm not getting a softtop.

Yeah, that's a great idea guys! Another one of those 'why didn't I think of that?' moments. We can do that. Not a problem. ;)

We're still plugging along :D....I'll post some update pics when I get them. We want to fine tune everything, and make sure we're ready for production, before we give you guys the go ahead. Again, we're gonna hand a couple out to folks that have been involved, for their fitting and thought before we take any orders....So, it will be a bit longer.....but not too long! :grinpimp: Stay tuned!

I like... I REALLY like that ambi door idea !!! Would save me buying new doors.:clap::clap:

Ambidoors are interesting....but how do you seal the outer edges? Also, if you have some cargo that slides, what keeps it from poking holes in your top?

Don't get me wrong, it's a neat idea, I just think we should think through it a bit. Most people use the bolt in panel, but I HATE mine when that's installed. You have to lift everything up and over and for me that's an issue.

Maybe he can sew a double thick panel at the bottom half?

Doesn't the spare tire latch need some resistance from the door to stay latched?
I think it depends on the spare tire carrier. Obviously if you have the carrier that is mounted on the door your dead but if you have the tube steel carrier that mounts to the body and the bumper, a soft ambulance "door", I hope would not pose a problem.

Rear Doors on soft top

This is the way I want my rear doors to be like. I can use my low swing doors, and these as "amby" type doors when the top is on.

If testers are what you guys are looking for, then I nominate JohnnyC for one of your first tops :cheers:

I have an original 1978, that I would be happy to have you do some fitting on/with.

Let me know, I am south of Raleigh, NC and it comes home this Saturday.

Thanks for all the work!

Where are you in Charlottesville highland? I am there at least twice a week.

Allrighty, updates! :)

As expected the bows [door frame]have been the tough part to work with. Initially in this project, my thought was to get started by producing an alternative frame design, "in house", that would allow use of the OEM fabric. [something that would be simpler to produce]

Well, it turned out that southerncruiser62 [ONSC pres.]was familiar with some larger metal fabricating outfits in the Raleigh area and graciously took the "bow project" under his wing. He's been working hard towards getting a good OEM replica bow set produced in bulk.

It has looked very promising at times, but as of yet, we haven't found the right outfit to produce these efficiently for us. If I'm not mistaken, issues with too long a wait on one, cost with another, and so on. Greg and I both will be looking into other metal fab companies until we find the right one. I've started looking in the Richmond, Va area now.[I've found one that appears very well suited] I'm also going to look back into alternative designs if we can't get a replica produced in a timely manor.

Anyway, softtopguy has been holding off a bit in the hopes that we could debut the frame and fabric as a package. We've decided to go ahead and put the fabric out there for those of you that might have OEM style frames and need fabric. We'll continue to work at getting a bow set produced ASAP. We're also going to be working on some other FJ40 related canvas items in the meanime.

Welp, I gotta rush off to work......I'll be back for details later today.
