Turbo muffler

Im pretty sure its not leagal in BC....

Okay, talked to my local CVSE guy.
Here is the answer in my own words and understanding.

Legally and technically speaking the answer in no.
All vehicles need a muffler equivalent to factory.

In the old days all vehicles had annually go to inspection stations for sound checks. Now its up to the discretion of the peace officer. If the vehicle is louder than a comparable vehicle of size and displacement, it's ordered in for an inspection (where they measure it in dB). I think this mostly applies to Harley's, and muscle cars etc....

All a muffler does is quite a diesel, It does not reduce emissions. So if you truck is quite without a muffler, then your good. Think about how load most new domestic diesels are. Even without a muffler you will not be that loud. My girlfriends turbo'd 3B does not have a muffler and its not that bad. Defiantly not to the point of every being pulled over. All and all it is pretty quite. Thought it does mean you have to speak up a bit to have a conversation inside. The turbo does a good job of cutting down on the noise.

In the real world in comes down to this:
If your truck is quite, it does not really matter if you have a muffler or not. If you drive by a COP or CVSE officer and your quite, he has no reason or suspicions to pull you over and look for a muffler. The intent of the law is to have quite vehicles and no screamers, if your quite then you should be good.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Nick

Wow Nick

Thanks for that great report ;)
No muffler is more simple as well, and also will let the old 13bt breath better.

Breathing would be in air intake side.
Removing the muffler is the other side, allowing it to expell gas better? :)
If you catch my drift (pun intended) :)

I have not had a muffler on my truck for at least 3-4 years and it's been through the AirCare inspection station each year without any issues or problems. I'm still registered in B.C. so I need to do the AirCare thing. I've NEVER had a cop say anything either and I've been all over the U.S., Canada and Central America in the past 3-4 years.

It's not significantly louder than it was naturally aspirated but it has a different tone, more throaty rumble then with a muffler.

Nick's girlfriend's FJ55 3B turbo is probably a little noisier since it doesn't have any carpet on the floor.

If you are really worried about the noice police, an option could be to weld in a larger diameter pipe to make it look like a glass pack, and that way you can say you have a muffler, but really, there will be no restrictions.

me, i like a muffler and a resonator. noise gets old fast.
when you get the exhaust done ask them to just run a dump and go for a boot, if you like it then get them to run a straight pipe out. if not then you can stick a muffler on at that point.
if it is acceptable at the dump it will be quieter when completed out the back...

one man's quiet is another mans racket...

i ran a 440 (425 hp) with 6" dumps. i LOVED the sound but people seemed put off when i rattled their windows as i drove by...
go figure...

stick a free flowing muffler on and you will be fine...

this is just my suggestion, take it for what it is worth...
cheers

i flattened my muffler 4x4ing a couple years ago and cut it back to just under the passenger door, added a cherry bomb and a side pipe in front of the rear wheel. it cost maybe $35 for the cherry bomb and $35 for the other parts. it was a cool for a few months, especially making more noise than the annoying rice rocket with the fart muffler in the other lane, that and blowing a little black smoke at their window, but now im looking at replacing the exhaust system too. on that note wher i can ifind a good quiet muffler that will fit between the frame and body of my bj60? anyone?

I also found it was dam cool to be able to show up those rice rockets. But ya the noise on my no muffler turbo 42 is getting very annoying, i love the sound but i can't handle the loud anymore. If anyone has pictures of mufflers on 42's i would love to see them cuz im having trouble figuring out where to put one. I should also mention im running3" exhaust.
Thanx

I think part of the problem folks have without a muffler is that they run the pipe as straight as possible. While that is good from the standpoint of getting rid of the exhaust it doesn't do it for noise. The bends cancel out noise and mufflers have some serious internal bends. I had the muffler shop run my 2 1/2" pipe in the same route as the factory exhaust except WITHOUT the muffler. This gives the bends for sound but makes the bends gently for better flow. I doubt that my truck as it is now is more than a db or two louder than stock.

most resonators i have seen look like a cherry bomb but the baffles are steel not fiberglas so they last a long time. even one of these will wqquiet the exhaust down a lot...
on the 42 we always had them back just in front of the rear axle...a steel free flowing muffler will last at least 5 if not 10 or longer years (depending on the location of the vehicle).

cheers

I run no muffler on my 42 turbo love it but on long trips with a soft top and no carpet it does getting annoying as it exits it drivers side. I will proberly get a new one but exit it to the rear still no muffler as I love that hint of turbo whistle.
