Trying to get to the pinion seal on a front diff

I dropped the driveshaft and now I'm trying to get to the seal but there is a circular meatl piece over it that I can't get out. Pic here :

That metal ring around the that seal won't come off. Any ideas on how? Tried prying with a screwdriver, no dice

A seal puller works best. Sears has them if you are near a sears or other parts stores should have them.
That ring is the seal. Try a bigger screw driver.

That ring is the seal...looks different the the rubber piece I bought from the auto shop..I'll get pics of that soon.

The oil there looks pretty goopy. Your oil seal at axle ends may be letting birf grease into the axle/differential. Have you got similar looking goop coming out at the steering knuckles?

Here is a pic that may help you. Put the screwdriver in beside the pinion and under the lip of the seal and push hard or beat the screwdriver sideways to pop the seal. In the background is a seal puller tool. Hope this helps.

If you can wait and get a Toyota(OEM) seal, return the crap seal you got from the parts store or you will have to replace it with a OEM seal when it fails. Make sure your breather is not plugged.
If you put a mark on the seat of the where the seal goes, put a bit of sealant on the lpi of the seal and seat.

I second the notion of a Toyota seal only. Do not use a cheapo seal from one of the parts stores. If you order from Toyota today, You'll have it overnight, usually. I don't think it is too expensive, either. Do it right, or do it over, applies here.

I amm not where I can scan a pic of an OEM seal in but I can tell you that the seal pictured is much less refined in appearance than an OEM seal. That does not mean that it will not work, only that is does not appear to be as well made as an OEM seal. If memory serves, the Toyota part number is 90311-38047.

I do stock it.

To install you set it in place and tap around the edge with a light hammer or if you have one, a seal installer or a very large socket that is about the diameter of the seal.

Put it in all the way, then later when you do the seal put it in flush with the outside. Here is a pic of a Toyota pinion seal. If you are not changing the flange and the flange has a groove in it from the original seal, you may want to put the new seal in a little farther if it will go to give it a new surface to ride on. Use a correct size socket or seal driver to put it in so you don't beat up the new seal. Good luck with your project.

I'm putting in the seal right now. I'm tapping it with a light hammer and it's in almost all the way but it's not flush. I assume it needs to be flush for the seal to work to it's potential. Also where can I get a seal driver?

Did you read the FSM before you removed the nut? DO you have a dial in/lb guage?

You are to use a torque wrench to check the preload on the pinion bearing before and after you remove the nut.

So basically after I dropped the driveshaft I should've used the torque wrench to find out whats the in/lb used to put the nut back on? I haven't moved any further on this project.
