Trying to get to the pinion seal on a front diff

Use a can of brakecleaner, carb cleaner or starting fluid, engine cleaner and spray it off real good then drive.
 
If the flange was grooved from the old seal and the new seal was put in the same spot as the old one, it will ruin the new seal or the new seal won't work properly. I would be surprised if a shop that knew what they were doing would install a new seal that way. They make seals with sleeves for replacements or you you can also get a new flange (and another new seal). Usually it's good to put some goop (silicone) on the outside of the seal when installing. One other possibility is the seal got damaged when driving it in.

You might also have a leak between the third member and the housing. Check the nuts on the housing. If it is a gasket in there you might be able to re-torque them and it will go away. If it was fipg it will not. If the diff was never touched it should be a gasket.
 
Could be clogged diff breather but you'll have a better idea after you get it cleaned up.
