Got an appointment in February to go to 4x4Labs in Grass Valley, Ca. from Tucson. They’re gonna install a tire carrier on their bumper I already have. Was gonna have it shipped but thought I’d throw the RTT up there and take a week off work. Which way would you go? It’s gonna be cold but I’ll probably camp at least a couple nights. Easiest and warmest way would be LA and up from there but I’d rather go a different route. Suggestions?

I regularly drive Tucson to Truckee (60mi east of Grass Valley), and the quickest way is through Vegas to Reno (13hrs total with minimal stops) but its pretty cold in winter with a risk of really icy roads around Tonopah NV. But scenic IMO (lived in N. Nevada for 10+ years). There's good camping just north of Beatty NV with hot springs which would be nice in winter, and Beatty is exactly halfway between Tucson and Reno. Everything else is longer, more wintery. Heard they got 31 feet of snow in 16 days at Mammoth Lakes CA which is another optional route up the east side of the Sierras (US395), would be great for skiing. Kind of the wrong time of year for camping. Good luck.

Joshua Tree NP should be nice this time of year

My Dad in near Reno, I like the path less traveled when I go. I go through Vegas and up but yes it can get chilly but February usually isnt to bad during the day. Enjoy the trip!

I’ve been traveling to LA for work lately. You’ll fit in well with your RTT with all the other overlanders there. Only, most of them seem to have sold their vehicles and are just overlanding in their tents on the ground.

My bumper on the stand and a few more. Met the Tundra owner. He’s gonna be a happy guy.
