Transmission swap questions

We have an '86 4Runner with the 22RE Turbo and an automatic and also have a complete '87 Hilux 4x4 with a blown engine and a 5 speed.

I would like to put the 5 speed in the Runner and part out the rest of the truck. Should this be a painless undertaking? The truck is a 22R so I don't know if there is a computer or not. The main concern is that the 22RE Turbo still runs without the automatic if there is a computer for that.

I'm an 80 series guy, so I don't know much about these trucks. It seems like everything on an 80 runs through the computer.

That 22R trans will not be long for the world behind that turbo engine...



There were a number of different five-speed manual transmissions that Toyota used behind the 22 series engine:


A carb version

A fuel injected version

A turbo version


Just for starters...


Each had larger bearings to handle the increased power output of the engine that was in front of it.



I do not remember a computer controlling the automatic tranny in that vehicle...

The tranny behind the 22R in the pickup should be a G52. It's a decent tranny, but it might not last long behind the turbo engine. Run it, see what happens.

The auto is not computer controlled. The only thing you'll need to worry about is jumpering the neutral start switch, and connecting the Reverse and 4WD switches. You'll need to swap over the pedals under the dash, the center console, flywheel/clutch, maybe the crossmember and driveshaft.

I just finished pulling the automatic out of my 85' 4Runner (22re) and putting in a w56 5-speed. It was a fairly straight forward project. As mentioned above it will require adding all the necessary mechanics/plumbing for the clutch. Also in my case we had to get shorter tranny mounting bolts for the top two bolts as well.

I think I have a picture somewhere showing all the components I had to purchase. I'll try to post it up later tonight.

Oh yeah, get your hands on a good tranny jack.

So what is the strongest 5 speed for a 22 series engine? Is it hard to find one? It's only a four cylinder, so how beefy does the tranny really need to be? It is only going to be a driver for work and for forest service roads and hunting, not rock crawling or serious wheeling.

The thing you might consider upgrading if you get a non-turbo 5spd is the TC input shaft - see bottom of this page. http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/transfercase/pickup_dual.htm

I've got the 5 speed from a 1991 V6 truck for cheap if you are interested. Transfer case too...

V6 tranny's are the R150F, won't fit behind a 22RE.

The STRONGEST 4 cyl tranny is the R151F "turbo" tranny. Expensive and hard to find. I've been looking for one for at least a year.

The r150 (v6) will bolt behind the 22r* block with a bellhousing from the r151 (22rte).

that doesn't mean it's a good idea. if you want to add a crawler box it would be a little easier to use the r151.

Do what Ranski did, the w56 is a pretty stout tranny and are much easier to come by.
