Transfer Case noise on 1974

@JohnVee is on the money. It could have to do with the fluid transfer issue. Was the transmission leaking from up at the top? When the seal between the trans and transfer case goes bad, the transfer case tends to pump its fluid into the trans, overfilling it and causing it to leak out of the little vent at the top. Meanwhile, the transfer case runs dry. This just might be your problem. Check the fluid level in your transfer case. That will tell you a lot. There is a temporary fix for this affliction that involves connecting the fill plugs of both the trans and transfer case with a hose to allow the fluids to normalize themselves. The real fix is to rebuild your transfer case, replacing the seal in the process.

Could this have anything to do with the common fluid transfer issue between transmission and transfer case? But I'm stupid, and very tired, so maybe I'm completely not thinking that through correctly.

Maybe...but I installed a bypass hose when I owned it to mitigate for this issue :).

Crazy story! Awesome. It's great to put a Previous Owner name to a truck...now @John Layland has @S4Cruiser to complain about when things go wrong!

Yeah, man! Just keep your eye on the 40 Series forum and read things that strike you as they appear. Ask questions when needed and double check as necessary. The 40 Series threads will at least give you bits of info and lots of keywords to search. I'd wager that the vast majority of MUD users don't even post, they just stockpile info by reading/searching whenever they need something and give back when they can. Don't be afraid to ask, but don't be annoyed if your only responses are ideas for searching. It's likely that there is NOTHING that hasn't been experienced and posted about already. Even some of us non-mechanical people can get converted into wrenchers.

Thanks @S4Cruiser for the FSM link.

EDIT: And remember that most modern repair shops, part-specific or otherwise, usually have no
