Has anyone rebuilt their linkage to get rid of that buzzing vibration noise?

My t-case shifter will start buzzing in the midst of driving along in 2 high.

I crawled underneath it and it looks like part #12 is kind of loose.

SOR didn't list a rebuild kit. Not sure if Toyota will either...

It would be nice though to get this thing quiet...

Buzzing? The most common transfer case sound is a whine, and it is usually from a worn idler gear shaft, if I recall correctly.

I had this problem on my 78 fj40.

The cause? PO had put a piece of tubular foam over the transfer case shift lever, and it either amplified or caused the buzzing.

Cut the foam off, the buzz vanished and never returned.

Just sayin'

I got this idea from Mark Whatley on the LCML. Loosen up the bolt, #48 on your drawing, and slide that piece a little bit away from the tranny. Part #12 will leave a gap between it and #17. Put a Generous blob of silicone sealer there, then cinch it all back down. Let it set up for a day before shifting into and out of 4wd. Vibration goes away completely.....at least if your case is good to start with!! Did this a few years back, and has worked wonderfully. YMMV of course! Cheers

That sounds like a good idea!

This problem is common to all the 72-80 shifters, and the 72-4/75 are THE WORST. This is the main reason I still have the vacuum shift: I've already got more noise in the 40 than I want to deal with. Why add more.

That said, I've been eyeing the shifter assembly from the FJ60, which has nylon bushings [like the front door hinge bushings] between the shift fork and the pivot pin. I think it might be possible to drill out the shift fork to the same size as the 60 and install these bushings.

If you try it. post up the results please. :)

Pablo, did you ever solve this problem? Mine buzzes too. Then I push it forward and it stops until I accelerate again, then the buzzing is back. Drives me nuts!

That's a good idea, but mine was delivered to the Port of Jacksonville. No rear heater option. :(

Another choice (but don't know if this will solve your problem) is to replace the bottom lug (#12 in the drawing) with an allen head bolt. Allen bolt should be 12mm, have an allen head with .700 to .710 diameter head (common size), and a matching 12mm nut. You then drill a .465 hole into bottom of the shifter bracket (#11 in the drawing) to accommodate the bolt. This way you have created a replacement bottom lug with the head of your 12mm bolt, and the bolt is a tight rattle-free fit into the shifter bracket #11- - -if that's the problem??

Funny, mine had that annoying buzz UNTIL I cut a piece of foam insulation and put it over the lever. I cut it a little long so as to put a little pressure between the knob and the boot. Go figure.

Thanks fellas, once I get a chance to stick my head under there, I'll report back:beer:

rubberbands placed strategicly will offer a cure and are cheap to replace.

I did this for a while.

I removed 12, (yeah, you have to remove a bunch of other parts as well) and slide a VERY THIN nylon washer or a piece of felt there (like a battery terminal felt) and reassemble. Do not over tighten the nut. ADD GREASE.

DRIVE.

Sounds like we have a winner!

Remove the nut that holds part 12 put an o-ring behind the flat washer reinstall nut, and squirt some grease in the zerk part 180

I might give that a try. Since this post in 2005, I did take apart my linkage and clean and grease everything. I did the 2-Lo mod at the same time.
It sounds good now.
I might try these ideas on my 55 which has a little noise...
Pablo I have a 4 speed twin stick shift plate i made with the L2 descriprion next to it like the H2 says. They are in production now.
