Looking into an H41 for the 78 Fj-40, I'm really trying to find a reasonable solution to deeper gears. so I found a mudder here with an H41 but on the opposite coast. I thought about having him ship the internals rather than the entire tranny. what do you all think? would the cost of shipping such an animal defeat the task ahead of me? I've never torn down a manual trans but I'm not too overly concerned about the task.

should I just look into shipping the entire trans or go for the guts instead? thanks

Oh and BTW- I'm looking forward to the title response here too.

If I had to choose between shipping costs and rebuilding a H41/H42, I would take the shipping at $200. If the H41 needs rebuilding then you have no choice.

Agreed. Try Forward Air as a freight option. I got an FJ60 trans AND split case here from Michigan for $65 a couple of years back thru them. WOW!

Mark, I like that option but hate to put the seller through all that BS, of course I'm sure tearing it down isn't much better. I'm thinking I should just wait for one to drop over this way...

Hypothically, If these trans are the same then dropping in the guts shouldn't be an issue, adding new syncros and checking surfaces, bearings etc. new parts would be minimal right? Seals, maybe a bearing or two and syncros??? I sure think I'm talkng myself into more work.

I think the SOR website claims that they ship their trannys w/out the cover via UPS.

Maybe you can have the top cover and tranny shipped separately?

That's possible I don't need the top cover but the trans is pretty heavy and might not box up to easily. I've never had it off the transfer so I can't rememeber how much it weighs but my other sm trannys were pretty heavy.

Anybody rememer abouthhow much an h tranny weighs????

UPS it

It'll cost you about $60 bucks UPS ground. Just put it in a triple box with some strapping tape. It's not like it's fragile or anything!

the tranny packed right with the top cover weighs 149 lbs .1 lb under the ups max you can buy 75 lb rated boxes and double them up as stated earlier and go ups .shipped several this way several years ago so i dont know the current rates good luck
