My 69 fj40 with 4speed tranny has been acting funny. Intermitently from a stop, when I let the clutch out I have no friction to the pressure. If shifted into reverse and bumped then I get friction to the pressure plate. Also intermintently while traveling on the freeway I will lose friction to the pressure plate, the same procedure fixes the problem. Only seems to happen while coasting. Any ideas.

How can you tell you're losing friction while coasting?

Adjust the clutch at the slave cylinder. Check for a rear main leak.

V-8 mod?
any smell?
pull the pan off the bellhousing and see what is happening

x2 on pulling the inspection cover. Look to see if the clutch hub is loose on the front bearing retainer of the trans, or if the bearing retainer perhaps has a groove cut in it. Chances are that since your problem is intermittent, it is a mechanical problem in this area.

Best
