Well where to begin... At the start.

I have owned a '81 BJ42 for around 2 1/2 years now, and have loved every single moment of it being in my possession. A shorty hardtop in great condition, but I've always wanted something else. Recently, I got back from one of my stints out at work (work 'out west' in the mining areas of Queensland, Australia) and decide it was time to get serious about it.

Found a guy just south of where I live who had this troopy. not bad condition, good for its age so I had to snap it up :D I missed out on a HJ about 2 weeks earlier so there was no way I was going to miss this one.

2F engine, extractors, dual battery system (although it was quickly removed). It says 45,000 on the clock but i doubt it is true, or whether it has clicked over once. I'm not sure, but it ain't right.

So here he is. Toyotasaurus Rex

And whats the plan you say? Well... I saw this pic on a forum a long time ago and can't seem to find it anywhere now. But this is what I have in mind (I assume some people will cringe when the see this):

Except for the over the top lift etc., my idea is to do much the same: Roof off, Full cage, 4 seater only. Mainly as a fun car to take up the beach here in QLD

I'm not entirely sure whether this falls into the hardcore section or not, but here it is :D

Since i work away I can only work on it every couple of weeks or so, so this thread will creep along at snails pace, but i'll get there :)

Work done so far:

Taken out the Dual battery system, and back to a single.
Re ran the electric fuel pump and lines, as it used to be secured to the dual battery tray
new spark plugs, oil, filters
sprayed the Air filter canister, have done the bash plates underneath the motor too
New fan belt
new guard lights
and general tidy up

runs smooth as now. it has 2 tanks, totalling ~190 litres of Petrol (Gas in the US i think :/ )

have torn out the house carpet the po had in it, to reveals some surface rust and bogged/rusted out areas. will be tackling these very soon. also removed the wheel carrier, and jerry can carrier.

Before:

After: had to grind off a stripped bolt on the seat back, after this photo

And i quickly realized the po had laid down enough of that tarmac binder or whatever it is on the passenger floor to cover a road. gotta start scraping

and the rust

will be looking at getting some of the steel replacement panels from coolfj40.stores on yahoo. anyone had much to deal with them? gotta get it mailed to Australia, hooray! :/

Also a quick question, are these mirrors even off a mack truck? can someone give me any information on these things. I love them, but i won't be able to use them :(

I saw the pictures you posted of this truck in another thread. I'm glad to see it will have its own dedicated thread. I'm looking forward following your progress and seeing lots of pics!

Looks like a decent project.. happy for you

Thanks. hopefully i can update it fairly regularly, but with work coming up it's going to be difficult.

Thanks

Be sure to remove any aluminum attached to the body ! Aluminum is the fastest way to create Electrolysis and rust out what good metal you have.
Nice find and project !

Cheers

Yeah sweet, I was looking at doing that anyways, just to get it back to steel. There are some rust spots under them, especially the rear corners and below the drivers side kick vent.

For colour of this beast, I was first considering Canary Yellow or something of the sort, but I will now most likely do Beige. After taking off some of that green paint, the base colour behind it is Beige. So hopefully I can make at least the colour scheme look original :D

I'm not sure whether the pic is working for everyone or not, but here's my goal as to what i want to build, minus the over the top lift etc. :D see if this works.

Does anyone have any information about this build? whether a thread still exists, or just any in general. would love to rack the brain of the creator.

Wish you guys would quit stealing my ideas...

Haha! nice one. You should consider it an honor that we want to be like you :D

My plate idea was just going to be REX 779 <-- birthdate of it, july '79. not my birthday

Will be planning to take all the bar work off Rex in the coming weeks, so I can remove that checkerpplating around the sides of him. will Keep the bull bar, scrub bars and steps. Will store or sell the other parts of the exoskeleton haha

Also will take back the whole bed to bare metal, clean it right up and give it a light spray with primer just to keep the rust off whilst im working away at the moment. Eventually i'm going to Spray the whole inside of Rex with (Black or Beige) Raptor Liner or something of similar value/quality that is available in Australia.

And as for exterior color I was considering a Canary Yellow of sorts, but i think i'll go with 464 Beige with Black Bar work, and Chrome anything else little.

Should be fun :D

Once you butcher this once proud vehicle into that bastardized pictured vehicle, will you also add the ultimate insult of an upside down bezel as in those pics?

:flipoff2::D:flipoff2:

I could do the stereotype TONKA sticker or badge work. Or cut the Badge to TOY, if i wanted to add more insult to it :p

Finally got back from a week working away from home, so I pretty much jumped straight into removing the rooftop cage/exoskeleton of my troopy, so that I can start get into rust areas easily enough. Tomorrow I will be taking the bed/floor to bare steel, then lightly primer grey it to protect it from further surface rust whilst I'm away for work. Build thread will be updated once it is daytime here to get decent progress pics

There was a fair weight in all that steel. i will most likely be keeping the bullbar, scrubs and the front hoop. the rest i will either keep or sell it if someone needs it.

The front hoop i figure i could possibly use for the bar work when it comes to do that, as i will rung a hoop behind the windscreen. but that chapter is much later in the story.

I think it looks good without all the bar work though. thought? it has raised at least an inch since removing it :D

Also wire wheeled part of the bed/rear floor as part of cleaning up the rust. I have had minimal time to work on this, so I spent majority of today doing this. tried to take it back to bare steel as best I could. I know it's no professional job, but it'll do the trick.

Have since sprayed Grey primer on it, just to protect it whilst I'm still away with work. Next up is to start tackling that back rust area and get some new steel in there.

I dig the 4-seater idea. Man that PO loved camouflage..

LS1/auto?

Nah he's 2F straight 6 and 4 spd manual. i don't want to get rid of this engine cause it seems to be running pretty smoothly. once It's on the road completely, only time will tell what i'll do it with it haha
