Europe’s CO2 regulations are strict, and becoming more so, and car makers are taking action to meet the tough standards. For Toyota, that means cutting back on RAV-4 sales, and eliminating the Land Cruiser from Europe altogether.

The Japanese maker seeks to reduce its fleet average CO2 emission to 140g/km to meet voluntary EU rules. The RAV-4 mini-SUV/crossover is so popular it’s skewing the CO2 emissions of the brand in Europe, so Toyota has decided to raise the price to ensure fewer sales, reports Auto Motor und Sport. The Land Cruiser, on the other hand, has never been a big hit with Europeans, and will simply be pulled from dealerships after the current model year.

Although the CO2 regulations are voluntary now, there is talk that they could become law in the near future, which explains why Toyota is taking action to meet them. Other car makers in the European market may have a tougher time manipulating their lineup to meet the rules, as many do not include small, low-emissions cars at all. Makers like Porsche have even threatened legal action if the proposed rules are enacted.

Because they love their Land Rovers !! Me too ;p.

The Europeans love the Land Cruiser but the 100 was too big for most of them. On the other hand, the 120 will be still be sold there I'm sure.

That's BS!! The French love cruisers, they are everywhere(seen them myself) everything but a 55 series is what I've seen. You can/could buy 70 series, 105 series in Belgium from these guys http://www.4x4extreme.be/acceuil.htm

No shortage of 100 series in the UK either. They may sell only about a fifth of the volume of Range Rover but that in itself makes them quite common. If you add the Collorado sales [these are now called just 'Land Cruiser' here] then Toyota sales are very good.
It is entirely possible that the big Land Cruiser is dropped in the UK as it provides little advantage over the Collorado [90 series and variants]. Not much more room inside and not much more capable. I don't think it would be missed terribly as there is plenty of choice.

No offense there guys but as an evil French:D, born and raised, I can tell you that 90% of the Cruisers we see in France are Prados (90s or 120s). You won't see many 80s and 100s (which I can only regret).

Agreed. Will they also drop the Prado's? Aren't a lot of the Prado's in Europe assembled in France?

 So the mystery deepens. French 4WD board members are adamant the 200 will be offered on the Yurpean market in December, quoting local online news magazines.

Maybe they will be eliminating one of the petrol engine choices for the 200, and keeping... a diesel option?

just back from Spain...

in 2 weeks, saw exactly 1 80 and 1 60... No 40 or 55 or 100 that I recall.

a bit more of the Prados but those aren't real LCs as we all (should?) know... :D

Coupla old Patrols. And a few Troopers...

I was in Spain and France last year and this year about 4 month ago .. there are not space for big rigs in the city ..

The People that have it ( all more than a Frelander it's huge there ) only used it in summer ( agust ) and need to pay extra space to park it.

Most of the apartment buildings have not much space for pakings as same as malls, markets .. etc etc ..

I figure how much dificult could be found parking for a 200 series ?

Most of people drive Smart, Motos, C3 from Citroen and so ..

Hey, they can't cut the LC from the European line-up; I want to buy one!

Magazines here in the UK are still carrying due dates for the UK arrival. In fact Auto Express, a pretty heavyweight magazine, has an article in its current issue (dated 29/09/07) announcing the new model and saying that it will arrive here next Spring, so maybe this story isn't true. Or perhaps the decision won't apply to certain countries, including the UK. LC's do seem to do pretty well here; standard Land Cruisers (sold as Prado's in most other markets) seem to sell in decent numbers, and Amazons (sold as Land Cruisers pretty much everywhere else in the World) are a fairly frequent, if not common, sight. Not bad in Range Rover land (they are everywhere).

Actually, it would seem reasonable for Toyota not to include the UK in a European marketing decision. After all, we don't consider ourselves to be European either...

Hey, I hope you weren't in Madrid and didn't send me a PM...
anyway, Prados (both the newer 102/125 and the earlier 90/95 sries) are fairly common here in Madrid. In fact it's the most sold 4x4 in Spain. But it outsells the 100 by 100 to 1 I guess. And in turn 9 out of 10 100's are the diesel HDJ100.
Certainly, the 100 is huge for spanish/european standards. But so is the Audi Q7, and it seems they give them free with every box of biscuits.
40's are a rarity, indeed, but if you didn't see any 100 you werent't looking vvery hard... or maybe it depends on the zone you are. In rural areas, older Patrols and land Rovers (Defender) are the standard 4x4 rig.
Here is a Toyota 4x4 Meeting we had in june, you can see there different models.

Check Toyota's UK and German websites, the 200 is on them but called the Land Cruiser V8. Other Toyota European websites either still show the 100 or only the Prado.

Hey, great, we're getting it in the UK - in diesel at least.

Now if they's just let us have the Lexus LX570...

Thanks for posting the info.
