This information pertains to 1958-9/1972 TOYOTA FJ-40 series models ignition switch and door locks.
I’ve spent several hours researching TOYOTA keys, door locks and ignitions. I went to 2 different old school local locksmiths in VA and both cut 4 keys each.
TOYOTA serial numbers are from 1000-6000 on the ignition and door(s) and a corresponding key codes. While I haven’t been able to find any direct information…I suspect the earlier trucks started at 1000 and went up in number by year sequentially. For instance my 1963 FJ-45 SWB has a 1000 series ignition and matching door lock. My 1967 FJ-45 LPB has a 2000 series ignition and a later model 5000 series door lock (doors are from a 70’s FJ-40). You will still see NOS 6000 series ignition cylinders and door locks with keys for sale.
Any good locksmith can cut you a key just using your key code which is on the ignition or door lock. The ignition or door lock doesn’t need to be present for them to cut it (unless they require it) as long as you have the code. However I suggest you take either the ignition switch or door lock or door in my case (because I didn’t want to take the time to take the lock off the door). This way you can try the keys on-site and verify they work before paying for them.
For TOYOTA FJ-40 series locks:
TOYOTA 1000 series locks are:
ILCO TA4 or Curtis or SILCA TOY2R
TOYOTA 2000 series locks are:
ILCO TA5 or Curtis TR11 or SILCA TOY2
TOYOTA 3000 series locks are:
ILCO TA16 or Curtis TR12 or
SILCA TOY10R
TOYOTA 4000 series locks are:
(I wasn’t able to find the ILCO or Curtis or SILCA codes for this series) If anyone knows the info please post below and I’ll update this section.
TOYOTA 5000 series locks are:
ILCO TA12 or Curtis TR14 or SILCA 1R
TOYOTA 6000 series locks are:
ILCO TA2 or Curtis TR6 or SILCA TOY1
I’ve personally found that the SILCA brand blanks are higher quality than the ILCO or Curtis blanks. If you can find and use those I would.
As of writing this on 11-3-22 www.sor.com still has #2 and #3 key blanks good for 1958-9/‘72. They are the only vendor I was able to find with OEM NOS TOYOTA MOTOR ignition switch/front door key blanks.
I was told by both locksmiths that I could use WD-40 to clean the door lock and ignition and then use any lock specific lubricant (they both recommended Houdini).
DO NOT USE GRAPHITE!!! DO NOT USE GRAPHITE!!! DO NOT USE GRAPHITE!!!
Ignition switch functions:

-1 turn right is "on"
-2nd right (spring return) is to start the engine
TOYOTA Land Cruiser LV 1963-1967 ignition switch and door lock key info:
I have been experimenting with several different key blanks that would work on the LV since those blanks are NLA. The KANTO key blanks are completely different from the TOYOTA 1000-6000 series key blanks. I’m lucky to have an original KANTO LV uncut set (door, ignition) to base the blanks off of. I don’t currently own a LV but sent 3 key blanks I think will work to Jim aka @gonzopancho who has 2x LV’s. The pics are ones he sent me. Thank you Jim for your help!
ILCO K1122D BN1 (was used pic 3 & 4) or Curtis BN1 or SILCA BN1 works for the door lock and the key blank turns in the lock as can be seen in the pics.
ILCO 62DH or SILCA UNI 1 (pic 2) goes in the door lock but doesn’t turn it. We’ll do some more investigating and report back.
Once we figure out the key blank that works in the ignition switch I’ll post that info here.
I hope this helps someone looking for this information in the future!
