first off, I could tow my trailer/FJ40 behind a Yugo and somehow make it across the country, so while this is definitely not something I'd condone, I now have firsthand experience in the process.

In 100% stock form, a 1996 80-series will tow a ~5500# trailer/FJ40 at 70mph and 3200 rpm quite nicely.....I do have a weight distribution hitch installed (completely NOT recommended by Toyota), and do NOT have trailer brakes (which would be nice, but dammit, it stops better this way than the Lemon does WITH trailer brakes...lol). OD was always off, and the Power switch thingie was always on.

On the Flats: zero problems, the headwinds we experienced today were a bitch (even the big flags were straight at us) but it was doable, and it held speed. Drafting rocks.

Fer the Uphills: drafting rocks, and is nice. Cruise control will kill out around 62mph when set at 70 (due to normal vacuum drop/motor rpm), and if you aren't watching it, the loss of cruise will knock you back 5mph before you even get yer foot back on the accellerator. Irritating, but expected. Also, if you aren't cautious, it will kick to 2nd and 3600-3800 rpm, caught me twice with that, so I backed off on my speed. These were TX/OK/MO hills too, none of these "real" hills like Tennessee or Colorado or sumthin....

And da Downhills: yikes....THIS is where towing with an 80 requires a steady hand and lots of towing experience. You top the hill and cruise didn't kick out, so the 80 accellerates like ALL Toyotas do, until you are pushing 73-ish....then, it backs out of the power, and the sway/loose feeling begins....very unnerving.... Part of the issue is the too-short wheelbase of the 80....really, in a "better" towing situation, the wheelbase of the 80 would be greater than the distance between the rear tires of the 80 and the front tires of the trailer....well, it ain't and it makes for odd towing.

So far, 1 quart of oil in 900-ish miles....engine temps and oil pressures are steady.

Anyways, I've got a pic of the setup I'll post later, forgot it in the rig, and I'm too lazy to walk 3 floors down to get it.... :D

I guess I should say , welcome :flipoff2:

Congrats on the 80 purchase. Looking forward toseeing photo's. I'm sure you got one with lockers.

Did you wheel the 80 at all on some of the easier (3 rated) trails.

The oil usage is probably not an issue as it is likely that there may have been a bunch of un-burned hydrocarbons in the crankcase and after a hard run like that they would have evaporated, resulting in "oil consumption" that didn't really happen.

I think all you really need to do is set up the brakes.

yeah...I've experienced the downhill thing a long time ago. Not a pretty picture.

But I find now with the S/C that I can drive with OD on and run at about 2400-2700 rpm while at 70mph (don't know what the rpm actually is...don't pay that much attention since it's an auto).

The CC is definitely something you have to be careful with as you point out. You can find out real fast that you're pushing too hard.

But like with anything else...you just gotta be aware and ready to deal with what's presented to you.

good to see you finally graduated to a *real* Cruiser... :D

Glad to see you made it home ok Woody and I didn't see anything on the news about anyone caught drowning their wife this weekend either :flipoff2:

Not home yet...St Louis.....home tomorrow nite....

I didn't even roll the 40, but did junk a knuckle and trunion....Jesse has those pics, nasty spot. Opted to not wheel the 80 since it is 1400 miles home, towing all the way.

However, the 40 did roll....Kris and C "entered" it in the tree-rollover contest....good times to hear two girls giggling as they deliberately roll the rig onto it's side....

Lemon is still in the friggin repair shop, and they'll want some $$ for telling me it's $6200 for a friggin motor...

hey, BTW: who's moderating this damn forum and allowing this idle s***chat?

Only thing I've noticed today it's it's a bit hard starting....assuming now it's from being hot, but who knows....

also, need a damn manual for the Kenwood in there....can't figger out how to scan for radio stations...lol

While towing my 40 I found the only way to alleviate that really light wandering steering on the downhill was to just keep acclerating. :D

Didn't you know? The 80 mods suck. :flipoff2:

Dude, you are in a hotel with a hotie and are wasting all your time postin here. What doesn't belong and why? :flipoff2:

Hard start prob due to heat. May want to have Cdan send you some starter contacts just in case.

good thot....already have a real antenna, FSM, and rear pinion bearings (howls from 45-55/60)....contacts are a good adder too....

now, to find a mechanic to install this crap for me....

Stop by in Naperville. I'm pretty sure I could install the FSM for ya.

Good to hear the 80 tows a 40. I'm looking forward to it.

The important question is how does C like the 80?

I've got no stop time, or I would....we are heading thru Rockford anyways....not yer neck of the woods....however, if you wanted a shop motorhome for a motor install, I have a candidate! lol (towing from St Louis to Appleton is $1350.....add on a motor for $500-1000....ouch....)

she loves it...which is good.....and also like that the truck is much more "me" than the GMC ever was!

If this isn't chat, I don't know what is.

Safe travels home. And I thought my holidays were expensive. That's a lot of gold stars and hats.

Towing from St. louis to Naperville can't be much cheaper and you'd still need a motor, but we'd be happy to throw one in.

I'm sure you'll have no problem finding free labor, it's that tow bill that's a biotch.

maybe you can throw it on a tow bar behind the trailer. That would be a test for the 80s trans. :D

I've flat towed my 40 with my 80 before and it was okay. I did'nt like it as much as towing with my T100. The worst part was the road between Green River UT and I84 to and from Moab. Two rutted lanes with my firend's Jeep right behind me with his headlights on ['cause it was dark] and I'm getting his headlights in the side view mirrors left, right, left, right, left, right as the 40 is wagging back and forth. Made me wanna yack!

Welcome to the world of towing with an 80 Woody! :D Now, loose the weight distribution hitch and install some Airlift airbags and get yourself some damn brakes! hehehe Serious about both. You'll be much happier and safer. Been there, done that w/o both and now with both, so some towing experience talking here. I may not be the expert some of you guys are wrenching these 80's, but I've already walked in the shoes you are in now, and I left them smelling just for the likes of you. :flipoff2:

Hey watchu talking about Willis? :flipoff2:

Glad it all worked out Woody, and you made it home safe.

Woody,

Agree with the airbag vs load dist hitch suggestion. AirLift bags are the hot setup for towing. But for crying out loud get some brakes on that trailer. Towing your truck's weight behind you unbraked is not just humorously anecdotal - it's criminally negligent, man. Serious about that.

I've got a little under 20,000 miles of towing a 6000lb boat trailer.
