So a few years ago I did a 1hdt swap in my 80 and the 5 speed at the same time. It has part time 4wd from the factory fyi. When driving in 2H or 4H it is fine, no banging sound at all. In 4L when going uphill the trans has notable movement. This is the sound of the shifter levers hitting the body at the entrance. It doesn’t affect driving, but is really loud and annoying.
First thing I did was replace the transmission crossmember support / bushing with oem part. I checked that everything is tight, including motor mounts, crossmember bolts etc. If you lay under the car and try to move the trans by hand or with a pipe it won’t budge. What am I missing here?
Is the torque in 4L of the diesel so much that it twists the trans? Or is there another contact point I’m missing? I suppose I could open up the holes a bit more, but I don’t feel like the trans should move that much even in 4L.
Any ideas would be welcome!
