Towing a trailer with an FJ40?

Also, I have seen people rent a trailer using one rig and then go home and swap it to another. All is ok I guess as long as there is no major issues. If so, the contract states the original combination will only be insured.

...and if there's an accident, I'll bet U-Haul will sue you for trailer damages, loss of use, and everything else. You don't want to be 'uninsured' when things go wrong and your truck-trailer combo wipes out a busload of nuns. Recall that U-haul basically won't connect any trailer to a variety of Ford Explorers, after the various Explorer debacles. They are very lawsuit-sensitive, and rightly so, sadly.

Not exactly the same set up you are looking at, but I have towed a small trailer (700 lbs empty, about 1000 lbs loaded with water, toys, etc...) with no problems. Towed from Montana to half way down Baja (Bahia de los Angeles) and back and a couple of times to Moab. Also a fully loaded Troopy. Four of us plus luggage/camping gear, extra fuel and water (I do have the heavy duty OME leaf springs). The Troopy is a 1982 with front disks. Also, the Troopy is quite a bit longer (more stable) than a 40. I would not want a heavier trailer without upgrading the brakes. It is not a problem, but I do use the gears to slow down as much as possible when going down steep moun
