I love having the LRA 40 gallon replacement tank under my daily driver '99. It has no adverse effect on daily fuel economy or handling. While I do have slightly stiffer springs in the rear of the 100, the tank and fuel weight would be no different than having a 200lb person sit in the back seat. In the past I had a Jeep with a swing out tire/fuel carrier and will never have a permanently mounted swing away preventing easy access to my cargo area again. It was just obnoxious after a few years.

The LRA 40 gallon tank "fixes" the biggest problem I had with the 100... RANGE. Now on long distance highway trips my bladder is what dictates stopping, not my fuel level. I don't have to fumble around with jerry cans, leaking spouts covered in gas or a swollen rotopax when on the trail. Sure the LRA tank wont win you any Instagram points like a beautiful rear bumper and swing out will, but it is hands down the best mod I have done to the 100. In fact, when we picked up a 200 for my wife last year I immediately set out to find a bigger replacement main tank for it... unfortunately only AUX tanks are available for the 200 :( If I bought another 100 tomorrow, the LRA tank would be the second thing I do to it (only 2nd behind replacing the heater tees).

The tank is also simple to install. I am sure you found my install thread, but if not here it is:

@87warrior is right, IF you can do this = DO IT!
As soon as you mentioned Alaska, I'd say LRA without hesitation.
Just going to AZ, this was my setup.
We all get it, fuel is a big deal.
I'd want that peace of mind...esp going to AK
Scepter 08669 Low Profile - 12 gal
and "Safety" siphon hose ("jiggle valve")
Gravity feed from roof
Not ideal but works and is cheap
Could do the same with 3 Jerry cans up there (for my setup)
40 Gal roof mount is a no go
LRA all the way
Best of luck and safe travels!

I am searching for fuel tank input, specifically what and where to mount the evap and canister bits that are above the spare tire. I will make a custom tank but need to move a few things.

I ordered (and am waiting on delivery) the LRA 24 gallon auxiliary tank for my 2000 (100 Series). I looked at all the angles relative to my situation and decided against the 40 gallon tank (hangs down to far). The cost is about the same I believe. With the 24 gallon Aux tank + the 25 gal OEM tank, I'll have about 49 gallons of fuel. I really like the setup from LRA. I got to meet and talk extensively with Kris at Expo West and feel very confident in my skills to install. Their documentation is pretty thorough. I've carried Jerry Cans before and am not thrilled with them. The swing out (I purchased mine from Victory 4X4) will be a little extra labor in getting into the back, but to me I had to ask myself "What am I going to use the vehicle for?" That really helped me decide if unlatching the swing out to get into the back was worth the extra fuel down below.
I have LRA 24 gal and have had nothing but issues throwing codes, over flowing EVAP, and in the engine compartment evap tank flood to choke and stall at road stops, the engine. Can you share how you managed the dual fill and issues with fuel transfer from aux to primary? Also how you are getting along using LRA dual fill receiver?

I've got the 24gal aux tank and probably wouldn't do it again.
However, driving to the Arctic Ocean in winter along the Dempster, it was really nice not having to worry as much about where to get gas.
As a daily, the 40gal would be best for me.
Dedicated proper overland rig, aux tank all day.
Also, line-x bedliner, POR, etc your tank before install. Mine's rusting to all hell at all the seams and bolt holes.

LastTry, I've heard from LRA that my tank should be here next week (or the week after). My gut tells me that I'll have some time around the holidays (and some help from some of my kids) to get this installed. I would love to answer your questions, but I'm not there yet. Have you contacted LRA about these issues? Ward and Kris are really nice and helpful (met them at Overland Expo West in September).

What year is your 100?

What year is yours? I'm asking this because evap system revised twice during the 100 series run at least in US spec.

Mine's a 2000

A 40 gallon main tank is nearing the top of my wish list for my ‘07, as some of you may know it is only sold for the 2005 and earlier models. I emailed LRA, asked them why it isn’t compatible with my ‘07 and what would need to be modified in order for it to work. This was their response:

“Sorry this tank is not compatible with your 2007. In May of 2005 Toyota made a change to the tub and tank. This cannot be made to fit.”

I’ve been playing with cars my whole life and know that anything is possible. Can anyone here offer more detail on the “tub and tank” differences? It’s hard for me to imagine that it’s that far off.

Following this discussion as an LRA is high on my list of next mods. Still debating what size to go with and 2nd and 3rd order effects of a rear bumper with swing-outs. My goal is to eventually move the LX out of daily status, but for now, it is my DD.

With both LRA 24 gal plus 4 4Labs f/r bumpers with swingout arms, i have been busy putting it all right. Yes swingouts a pain esp if towing. The cost is absurd for the added fuel. However having that fuel avail without messing with cans spoiled me. 2007 MY apparently does not like LRA fuel connection to the EVAP plus fill holes are too small, and thats taking an insane amount of time and cost to put right. Matters not which western state where I have traveled and fueled. Hoping to report success soon for the LRA. Its an empty paperweight now. My goal and single purpose for this undertaking is to get safely to Darien Gap.

I just drove from Massachusetts to Panama in a 99 with a stock tank and 4 jerry cans strapped to the roof. Not once did I actually use the gas on the roof. The fuel infrastructure in Central America is actually quite good (on par with the US)

Moral of the story… your stock tank will get you to the Darien Gap (but it’s nice knowing you’ve got some extra in reserve)
