this is what i did to get more aproach angle to my 70 series....
yup I installed an 8274 on my friends LJ along with an homemade bumper, if it wasn't for the fairlead, it would only stick out about 1/2" from the end of the frame rails. There was a bit of cutting the grill involved too but nothing major :D

or you could have made a cage that sat above the frame so the winch was now 5" higher than it is now...
just a suggestion

I've got a MileMarker 9000 lb hydraulic winch on my BJ-42 and all I can say is that I have never regretted that decision. One of the absolutely marvelous characteristics of a diesel-powered cruiser is that it's damn hard to kill it. I am a believer that with an engine running and available, and you have power steering, there is no finer winch choice than hydraulic. If you have a gasser, then an electric might get more consideration as the gas engine itself is the weak link. With the gas engine dead and sporting an electric winch, you at least have some limited self-recovery time before your batteries are toast.

At to PTO winches...I think they have definite virtues; however, unless I buy a truck that already has one installed, I am not likely to ever try to source and install one. It seems to me that most of the PTO units that come onto the market are largely warn out rusty hulks. Lots of attention and work are needed to refurbish and install.

My vote definitely goes: HYDRAULIC!

You would have to cut the grille anyway, unless you shifted the winch forward about 2" if my mermory serves me right. I don't really like the idea of mounting above the frame anyway, it would drastically block the rad and the pulling geometry would be less than ideal ;)

BTW, the front bumper tube will be reworked, I half-ass hacked it in a hurry, if it was just for me I wouldn't have put anything at all :D

this is one area you and i do differ, i run my winches higher for a couple reasons. it helps keep the winch out of the mud, gives better approach angles...
and yes you would have to make the mount forward about 2-3"...
cheers
