No really report back on any MPG increase, I need an good reason.

Somebody tell me this is a bad idea...

I have my snorkel mounted and everything is air tight from the intake up top all the way to the air filter box. We have been having a lot of rain lately and I can't help but think that water can and will get into the air box. What about drilling a 3/8-1/2 inch hole at the bottom of the snorkel (the part that is visible from the outside). The Airtec molding around the fender pass-though is far larger than the actual tube that comes through the hole cut in the fender so all water ingress would drain through the cut hole. This way I get extra protection for the air box. I could plug the hole when around water or just leave it plugged up and remove the plug in heavy rain.

Am I a genius or a dumb-ass?

Based on the fact that I've never seen another snorkel with the drain hole i'd leave it as is from the factory... If the hole was needed I'm sure they would be added by the manufacturers...

it should have holes at base of air ram on back side that water would go through if entered device ....per their website. I know the Safari has them too and venturi effect pushes rain to sides of snorkel where it drains out while air continues down to air box. Same effect here I suppose...

Paul, the OEM airbox has a one way drain valve in it. I'd leave it as is. Or after driving it in a down pour remove the air cleaner and see how much moisture is in the bottom of the air box.

Related Question: Has anyone taken their Airtec through a carwash yet? The old school kind with brushes that slap your car? Any concerns about the snorkel going through the carwash? I've heard guys with the Safari snorkel say that its no problem - wondering whether others with Airtecs have tried it?

it is lower to roofline and lays right up against a-pillar so should be LESS obtrusive than the Safari version in brush and car washes. Only difference is you cant put that cool pre-filter on the TJM like you can the Safari for dust storms. :)

But you can put a sock on the TJM.

I would run the truck through the car wash without even thinking about it. The mount is solid. It is not going anywhere.

What about the high pressure stream of water that's sprayed directly at the front of the truck in an automatic car wash? Not ingested?

ive been living with my tjm for about 3 months now.

I dont do automatic washes because its against my religion, but a direct spray with the hose isnt an issue.

downpours are not an issue. There is moisture in the airbox, but the filter doesnt get wet, its all on the bottom.

rivers are not an issue.

MPG did not increase...even a little...

Road noise only increased a little, but my radio is usually on so i dont notice.

tree branches that will break my rear spoiler off don't phase the snorkel.

Quality product, just put it on and forget about it.

Water Drainage (TJM Airtec snorkel)

I did some additional research and it appears that the newer design for the 100 Series snorkel does not have any drainage built-in. TJM's marketing collateral states:

This is referring to the Safari-like snorkel models that they offer.

Finally, according to this document, it is our responsibility to ensure that we have a one-way valve in our vehicles and to firmly seal any holes that are on the (non-TJM) air intake path.

Going to check for the one-way valve in my air box. I could have sworn that the round air canister 100/105 crowd were the sole beneficiaries of this valve. I'll know in a bit....

Ok, unless I am missing a part, our air boxes do not have a one-way valve. What I found was a plastic cap with a hole in it. You can even see the paint of the fender well in the hole of the cap. It would take a long water crossing, but our fancy snorkels would be rendered useless in prolonged deep water. Does anyone know if there is a replacement part for the "plug" we have at the bottom of the air box?

In case you were wondering what got me started on all of this, I ran across a thread while researching the water fording abilities of TJM snorkels:

Hmmm...maybe a "reed valve" could easily be fashioned from a thin piece of plastic glued to the bottom of the hole in the air box (one side glued to act as the hinge). Water (and dust), at least any significant amount, wouldn't be able to enter but water would be able to escape.

I don't remember seeing it on the NA spec airbox but this is where one (out of 2) of them is located on the cyclonic air box.

Is that what a one-way duck valve looks like?!
I have been wondering about that. Can it be seen from above/below the engine or does one need to pull the airbox to look underneath?
