anyone have cool ideas on siping tires?
im gona try to do it with a skill saw . . .
has anyone done this ?

Dude, get a proper grooving iron to do it

No, on second thought, use the skill saw, and post up the results

If you are really going to use a skill saw please wear iron pants and get out your insurance policy. I imagine you'll get some nasty kick back with that. Tire grooving irons are only ~$60, much cheaper than an ER visit.

Dude, a reciprocating saw will just ruin your tires. A good utility knife is all you need, and probably replace the blade between tires. A recip on tires would not be siping, that would be....um....fxxxing them up, is what I think the technical expression is...yeah, fxxxing them up.

Tire siping or Tire grooving?
Large difference in what they are and what the results will be. Roger Brown's 4Crawler page has an excellent article on diy tire siping.

I can only asume you are joking... If not, do you have a skil-saw? Have you tried it on anything? It's not gonna work man! Either it's gonna grab your blade and shoot the saw into your groin..or if you manage to start cutting it will melt the rubber and clog it up right away, and then slam in your groin.
Or, the cutting goes fine for 2 mins. and then the saw-motor burns

And if you against all odds manage it you will have grooved your tires not siped them:clap:
I would sooner try it with an anglegrinder then a saw
:hhmm::bang::grinpimp::meh::flipoff2:

Try the knife-approach first..but be careful with your groin doing this to...real easy to cut your d##k off:cheers:

Please video tape this effort as I'm sure it will get a Darwin Award.

hmmm.
well ill do some tests on my spares.
i am trying to sipe and not regrove.
with the skill saw i can set my blade depth at least, and i dont think it would kick back just smell like crap.but the blade is probably too wide.
maybe the jumbo OLFA is the way to go (i can tape 2 together to speed up the job).
the skill saw will just impress girl friend!!!

Please go with boots4's advice and get the siping tool for $60...

make sure your girlfriend watches as you try it with the Skil saw, I promise she will want to marry you after you "impress" her with your skills.

I just went to the tire store paid the $40 and had them all done with a machine. The rebalanced them and rotated them too.

Your sig doesn't give us a clue where you are & you don't say why you think you want to sipe your tires.

If you're looking for snow traction, it may be the answer for heavily-lugged tires. I got new Goodrich MTRs a few years ago & then proceeded to get stuck in my own driveway (7% grade gravel) in an early, wet September snow. Went back to Discount to pick up my new spare wheel & tire they screwed up getting & they siped all of them for "free" as a consolation prize. Now they work pretty well in snow. Next time I'll buy something more snow & highway-friendly since we don't have a lot of mud in front range CO.

The trouble with the siping machines is that they sipe indiscriminately, including right next to the edges of the treads where they'll end up just slicing the edges off. Done by hand, though much more time consuming, you can sipe each tread as you see fit.

im just trying to make a snow tire/mud tire.
there 35'' bfg mud terrains.
i carved them up like a turky
skill saw worked good on my spare. . .

Actually they set the machine up so it only did my center lugs. It is still at right angles and doesn't follow the tread blocks. But the tires work tons better than before.
