I am looking at new tires for my Tacoma. I currently have MT Baja MTZs that have been awesome. Loud but awesome. They have lasted 40K miles. Should I replace them with the same or go with Toyo Open Country MT/ATs? The BFG KM2s are out as they are almost 40$ more per tire. Seriously BFG???

Thanks

i must admit my michelins have impressed me....

Mostly driving on the road. But the fear of ever getting stuck keeps me up at night. I have a 3 mile drive into work. use the car for long road trips. I like to be that guy out in the snow when everyone else's car is stuck in their drive way. Plus, aggresive tires just look good.

I've had the Michelin LTX, and Toyo Open Country AT's and both did great off road and in the snow as well as are great road tires that seem to last forever. I'm a little more partial to the Toyo for price and tread pattern. I've also had a handful of cheaper truck tires and I could really tell the difference in quality. On my fj60 now I have KM2's, which are amazing off road but don't last on the road at all. I might get 25K miles out of them.

To throw another into the mix how bout the nitto terra grappler?
Ive been impressed with the wear and driveability on and off road on concretes rig.

I love my KM2's but as mike mentioned they will wear fast.

and if you like the toyo open country check out the cooper discovery stt with almost identical tread and a bit cheaper

I have the Cooper Discoverer S/T on my Troopie and they were nice for about the 500 miles before my transfer case started eating its self. Not as aggressive at many of the MTs out there, but more so than an AT. Not as loud as the GY MTRs on my 100 and decent price at Sears:meh:

Stay with the baja's you have... one of the longers lasting best MT's out there.

Nitto's are nice but all the reports on them I got at my last job indicated that they blow out way more than the other "truck" tires we used to sell.

Just my 2 cents

Another vote for the Nitto TG's, I was extremely happy with them and I suspect Clint is still rolling on mine. I'd also suggest looking at the Hankook Dynapro MT's - they are less $$$ than most of the big brands, and are a nice mix of aggressive AT/mild MT. I have +27k on mine and they've held up great with plenty of life left.

The Michelin LTX are hard to beat for an all around street tire. quiet, long wear, great ride and an efficient tread pattern for the street.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm going to head into 4wheelparts on Tuesday and check out what they have in stock and may close the deal then. I will keep everyone's recommendations in mind. I might even print out this thread to take with me.
Not to hijack my own thread, but you all need new avatars. They are all strange/creepy...Yeah, I'm looking at you little_joe.

Firestone Destination MT's... mine are quiet, and should last longer now that my wheel bearings are tighter..

i am on my 3rd set of Firestone Destination MTs. I love this tire. i have gotten about 50k out of the last two sets. I cannot say enough good things about these tires. their sidewalls are extremely tough and they are pretty quiet for an MT as well.

I'm with Al here. I love my MTZ's. if I had to put some on something that got a lot more road time I might look at the ATZ's. I cannot say enough nice things about my MTZ's though. Mine are only a year old but I will definitely be putting on another set. $0.02

I like my 33x12.5x15 MTZ's but admittedly have no frame of reference other than BFG AT's from the early to late 90's. I researched the hell out of them and still almost went with something else but was glad I didn't. Approx 6000 miles in the last year and still look good. I figure it'll be another 6k+ before I see some real indication of abnormal wear. Handling has been good, but you already have them so you know the specifics. I was leaning towards the Cepek FCII's (mainly out of nostalgia). Might go that route if I ever need a more streetable tire. I'm really surprised to hear the great tread life reports of the others here on the MTZ's - I had resigned myself to ~25k. Let's check some stuff out tomorrow at 4WP.

Just to throw one more option in the mix that doesn't get a lot of attention - Kelly Safari TSR. The tire pictured below has 50,000 miles on it on my wife's FJC (rotating 5). Great on road, better than any other AT I've tried offroad.

the goodyear duratrac is a very agressive AT that is supposed to be a good tire as well. I am between that and the Destination for my next set, however, i will most likely got with the destination. Even though i dont wheel every weekend, i have never had anything but an MT since high school, so why stop now
