I have a light purple tint right now. I need to get a darker tint to be cool in the sun under all that glass. I guess it sounds straight forward to take off. Is it straight forward to put it on or do you have someone install it? Any recommendations on which brand?

As far as looks go, I think I like it not tinted. But I love what you get from tinting - a cooler land cruiser and happier kids. I hate getting into a hot car when it is sunny and in the 60s.

I didn't see any blue 60's so I thought I would share.

The front windows are rolled down. But you can see the tint on the passenger, and rear windows. That is the darkest legal tint (35%, i think) you can put on the front windows all the way around. I was like 10 years old when my Dad and older brother did it themselves, about 6 years ago. Still holding up well. They got it at Wal-Mart. We had it on the back window but after it got broken we never re-tinted and now you can see out the back better, so it worked out pretty well. Also no tint on the windshield.

Thanks for posting that picture. It gives me an idea of what mine would look like (also smurf blue). A while ago, I found a pic of another one, also blue, with dark tint. It looks OK, but I'd get tint for the benefits it offers. When I had a black car with dark black tinted windows and black trim, that looked really slick.

no problem, peterdouglas

I've never had tinting on a 4x4 before. Had some dark ass limo tint on a jetta, and some varying levels of tint on other rigs. felt like I would be screwed at night in the woods, which I find myself in more often that one might think...

Anyone got thoughts on the darkest tint that is still fuctional off road at night time?

Nice to see some more black tint on a blue 60. Even though there's a bit of glare on the windows, it gives me an idea. I used to have a 1994 Escort 4 door hatchback. It had super dark limo tint on the back windows and gradually lighter tint as it progressed to the front windows where it was a fairly light 50% tint. Looked sharp, especially since the car was black, but if I'd do it again, I might go for a lighter tint, maybe 35% or 50% all around. A good compromise that will keep some of the sun out, give a bit more privacy, yet still not impede night time visibility (which was darn near impossible when I had 5% tint on back window in the Escort). I believe it was Llumar window tint and it held up quite well. After about 8 years, I peeled off a sticker from the back window and saw the tint had faded a bit, not to the extent where it looked purple. More like brownish-black. I'm sure the quality of tint is even better today.

The quality of tint has gotten better. Mine is tinted with 20 in teh back and 35 up front. I like it alot. The reason some shops will not tint older vehicles is because of scratches on the inside glass. My rear windows are a good example. after razor blade cleaning and tinting there are marks that can be seen on the outside because the tint makes these scratches pop out more. I will try and get a picture so you can see what I am talking about.

That's not such a bad problem to have ;)

On my first poo brown cruiser, I had no tint and it was hot in the summber time.

the second BJ came with tint and it's a lot cooler in the summer months.

Personally, I love the look of tint. Looks more bad ass as far as I'm concerned.

Sounds like a good set-up for the tint. That's what I might get. As for the scratches, that might be what the guy at the tinting place was getting at. Although, as far as I know, my windows have never been tinted, and I during regular cleaning of the windows, I didn't notice any scratches (although I wasn't looking that closely either). Still, I'd rather live with tint that shows a few scratches for the benefits it will offer. My truck is in nice condition, but by no means perfect, so I can live with a few things like that.:grinpimp:

Oh, there is one substantial problem with tinting that nobody has mentioned thus far...

The REAR WINDOW. If you have defrost strips, and damn near everyone does, if you ever need to remove the tint back there, the glue holding the tint on the glass may be strong enough to remove or damage the coating on the defrost strips when peeling the tint off, rendering them inoperable (I speak from first-hand experience). Also, removing any residual glue poses a second chance for additional damage to those strips.

Good point. Best to get good quality tint to avoid removing it later if it fades, though it won't solve the problem if you want to take it off just so that the windows are untinted.

Now that you mention it, the old lady and I do sleep in the back a lot in the winter camping. Maybe it would be better without bystanders!

On another note, the only problem I have with removing tint is that I always f*** up the rear defroster, which I need to be able to use all winter long...
