Good Evening All,

I just bought a 1998 and need to replace the timing belt. Do I need to remove the water pump to replace the timing belt?

Thank you,

No you don't have to remove it, but it would be foolish to not replace it while you are there. The TB runs through the waterpump. Unless you know it is new, the WP will fail. I just did a TB/WP replacement on a 266k+ vehicle for its first time. The water pump was seeping and the owner didn't know. The TB was fine. He was close to a failure.

My cruiser is at the Local Toyota dealership for scheduled maintenance right now. They suggested replacing the timing belt. I read here on mud that the cost to replace the water pump should be only for the part itself as there is no extra labor when replacing the timing belt.

Since I do not have a manual yet, I thought I would ask here.

Well removing the water pump does take additional labor. Labor being in actually removing it and installing a new one and also now they have to completely fill the cooing system since the block totally drains when the pump is removed where doing just the tbelt you just top off the cooling system.

@whitestripe while true, it's minimal amount of work. Certainly not worth skipping while you're in there.

I guess I should expect additional labor to replace the water pump then? My dealership quote is $230.00 (labor) and $158.00 (waterpump) to replace the water pump + $32.00 for coolant. Doe that sound about right? total $388.00

From my experience that's way too much labor, but the part price looks low and I get a 25% discount on OEM. It should only take an additional hour or so of labor and thats being generous I think. Others may chime in to see if I'm forgetting something

Thanks. That's what I thought too. I read there are four bolts for the water pump. If I did it myself, I estimate up to an hour plus 15 minutes to put the coolant back....

Our dealership charges an additional $107 for labor on the water pump, on top of the $535 you're paying for the timing belt labor. I don't have parts prices in front of me.

BTW, it's actually 7 additional bolts, an o-ring on the water bypass pipe, and seal packing (FIPG) on the water inlet housing they also have to deal with.

I say do it yourself and buy an Aisin kit (W/P & T/B) comes with hydraulic tensioner and pulleys,it only cost me under $300 for everything including a gallon of Toyota red coolant. Just take your time and save the money for other stuff. Just my 2 pennies.

Laborwise, seems that they are wanting to charge you the flat rate for the WP R&R- as if they weren't already in there, I would call them on it and ask them to be reasonable (maybe 30 minutes no more than 1hr extra).

Not sure how many miles on your rig, or the history, but the other PM things that probably should be replaced while they are in there (if it were mine):

(Parts Price-no labor)
Belt Tensioner ( if its not already part of the WP kit) $30-40
Idler bearing $30 +/-
Tensioner Bearing $40 +/-
Thermostat & Orings $20 +/-
2 Cam Seals $15 +/- ea
1 Crank Seal $12 +/-
Serpentine Belt $25 -$40+/-

And at this service interval
Plugs- DIY
All drive line fluids- DIY

good luck

The book rate for replacing a water pump is 4.5 hours of labor.
I'm sure- by it self, but it can't possibly be an additional 4.5 hours of labor to R&R the water pump if you're already in there with everything pulled away replacing the TB.

Average price based on pulling quotes from 7 different shops in Houston was ~~$1300.00 for the full timing belt service (parts + labor) e.g. Belt, tensioner, seals and water pump. It pays to shop around I had mine done for much less.
