what year 1f?

what type of dizzy ( vacuum advance i would guess with points ? )

this is what i do:

1) You want to make sure you vehicle is completely warmed up and at operating temperature.

2) with the vehicle off ( obviously ) remove your dist cap, rotor and dust guard.

3) next set your point gap to factory settings for you year.
To do this you want to make sure:
a) your points are good, if not change your points
b) make sure the cam follower of your points is at the top edge ( highest point ) of the distributer cam. ( you can place the car in the highest gear and rock the car back and forth to get the cam with the point cam follower at the highest point, remember to put it back in neutral alter before starting it :)
c) loosen the concentric screws and adjust your points in tolerance for the factory spec.
d) tighten the concentric screw of the points and retest with your point feeler gauge that you are still in tolerance for factory specs
c) once the points are adjusted, put on the dust cap, rotor , and dist cap.

4) hook up your dwell rpm meter and start up you rig.
make sure your rpms at idle are at 650-700 rpms, andjsut the throttle screw on your carb until your in that range.

5) hook up your timing light ( number one spark plug wire and a good ground )
Make sure to disconnect the vacuum line from the vacuum advance on your distributer.
With the rig running point the light at the bell-housing timing hole.
Depending on your elevation you either want the ball bearing and the pointer to match up with is 7 degrees BTDC ( zero elevation / sea level ) or at higher elevations, around 10 degrees BTDC. ball-bearing below the pointer is advanced, ball bearing above the pointer is retarded.

6) if your timing is off turn of the rig, you will need to adjust your timing.

7) carefully loosen the dis clamp below your distributer, make sure not to pull the dist out / unseat the dist, as the dist powers your oil pump. :)

8) if your timing is advanced carefully turn your distributor CCW slightly, make sure your distributer is FULLY seated before tightening the distributer clamp, if your timing is retarded carefully turn your dist slightly CW and tighten your dist clamp making sure the distributer is fully seated.

9) hook up your timing light and check you timing again, rinse and repeat until you get the desired timing.

Once the timing is set reattach your vacuum line to the vacuum advance on your dist. You may have to adjust your throttle screw on the carb after you set you timing and get your rpms at idle around 650-700 rpms.

10 ) i would then check your dwell angle if you like, and possibly look into a lean drop on your carb, but that can come later :D

FTFY
